Math is cool : 6 Vedic Maths

Tricks for Multiplication and
Division
MAY 7, 2015

So you find Maths boring? Calculations in mathematics seem like an

uphill battle for you? No, not anymore. Edcoogle is here with some amazing
vedic maths tricks which will make the subject seem like a piece of cake. You
can perform multiplication and division very easily in a fraction of seconds. So
get familiar with the some of the coolest and most amazing tips and tricks
which will make you a math-magician.

Let’s start with the vedic maths tricks for division. Check out these shortcuts:

1. Vedic Math Trick for Superfast division for two digit number by 9 (Nine)

Let us solve this by taking an example. Dividing 34 by 9

Step 1: Write the left most side of the digit of dividend taken separately. This is
going to be the quotient.

Step 2: Add the digits of dividend (that is 34) together which will give result as
7. 7 will be now remainder.

So Quotient is 3 and Remainder is 7.

One can easily cross check by calculating properly.

Isn’t math is cool? How we can arrive at such results so early.

Here are few more examples, take a look:

1/5 4/4 7/1

1 4 7
1/6 4/8 7/8
15 / 9 gives Q = 1, R = 6
44 / 9 gives Q = 4, R = 8
71 / 9 gives Q = 7, R = 8

2. Vedic Math Trick for Superfast division for three digit numbers by 9 (Nine)

Let’s take the example of 124 / 9.

Step 1: Place the two digits of the dividend at the extreme left together and add
the left most digit to it. For example: 12+1= 13.

Step 2: The digit at the unit’s place of the dividend will be summed up by the
summationof two left most digits. For example: 4+ (1+2)=7

Step3: So answer will be quotient=13 and remainder= 7 for 124/9.

12 / 4 21 / 5 40 / 3
1/3 2/3 4/4
13 / 7 23 / 8 44 / 7
124 / 9 gives Q = 13, R = 7
215 / 9 gives Q = 23, R = 8
403 / 9 gives Q = 44, R = 7

Some rules to consider:

The remainder will be the sum of the digits of the dividend.

The first digit of the dividend from left hand side is added to the second digit of
the dividend to get the second digit of the quotient as the answer.

This digit will be added to the third digit to get the remainder too.

3. Vedic Math Trick for Superfast division for number having greater than
three digits by 9 (Nine)
To find the quotient and remainder for 234571 / 9

Step 1: Pen down the first digit 2 as the first answer digit for the quotient. Now
this 2 is taken and added back to the next digit that is 3. This will give 5 as the
next digit as result. By this way 5+4 =9, 9+5 =14, 14+7 =21 and the remainder
will be 21+1 =22. See the figure for this cool vedic stuff happening:

9 ) 234 5 7 / 1
259 14 21/ 22
26061 / 22

Step 2:The remainder 22 here is larger than 9 and so divide by 9 giving

remainder 4. This 2 will be added up to 26061 to give answer as: Quotient=
26063, Remainder = 4

Vedic Maths Tricks for Multiplication

Done with Division right? So we hope you that you practice these cool math
tricks day and night in order to become a math champ. Now it’s time to focus
on multiplication. Starting with the easiest one:

1. Multiplying two single digit numbers

8* 6

Step 1: Subtract the two numbers by 10.

Step 2: Multiply the results with one another to get the unit’s place.

Step 3: Subtract the first subtracted result that is 2 from the multiplier that is 6
to get tens place as 4.
The final result is 48. Woah! So we have done a really cool vedic math
calculation here. Now let’s look at more such cases.

Point to be noted: This is possible for small numbers and when multiplying
small numbers like 6*4.

2. Multiplying two numbers between 89 to 100.

Let’s take an example : 89 * 97

Step 1: Follow the first two steps from the above method. For two digit
numbers, subtract from 100.

Step 2: Now, subtract the subtracted result of 97 that is 3 from the multiplicand
that is 89. You will get 86.

How you have to perform the calculations is shown in the figure below.

The final answer is 8633.

3. The Vedic math trick for three digit multiplication is the other way round.

Let’s take an example : 105 * 107

Step 1: Follow the first two steps from the first method only.

Step 2: Now add the subtracted result to the multiplier that is 107.

How you have to perform the calculations is shown in the figure below.

The required answer is 11235.

4. Carry Addition

Let’s take an example : 133 *120

Step 1: 100 is subtracted from both multiplicand and multiplier.

Step 2: The two subtracted numbers are multiplied and carry which is 6 is kept
aside.

Step 3: Now like before, 33 is added to multiplier 120 to get 153.

Step 4: The carry 6 is then added to 153 later to get final result as 15960.

5. Multiple two numbers that are ‘closely related’

Let’s apply the math technique described above to the most general case, i.e.
the multiplication two numbers which are ‘closely related’. What is ‘closely
related’, you ask. Well, the exact definition of closely related is this :

“Numbers that are a small distance away from a ‘proportional power of 10′
such that the differences between the original numbers and this proportional
power of 10 are simple to multiply”.

Let’s take an example to understand this vedic maths trick for multiplying two
closely related numbers : 489*512

Step 1: Have a WORKING BASE as 500. Now add and subtract accordingly to
get the numbers.

Step 2: Multiply the results keeping the sign intact.

Step 3: Now add the subtracted result of multiplicand to the multiplier to get
501.
Step 4: Now, multiply 501 with 5. The diagram below shows the first four steps
from left to right.

Step 5: Keep the carry aside as shown that is -1.

Step 6: It is a very important step. Complement the -1 sign as we cannot keep

negative sign in the answer. So it now becomes 68.

Step 7: Finally subtract -2 from 2505 to get the result as 250368.

Steps 5-7 are demonstrated in the diagram below.

6. How to extend the multiplication technique for bigger numbers

The Vertically and Crosswise vedic maths technique described above works

for a whole lot of numbers, especially those numbers near a power of 10, i.e.
10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000, etc. As long as the initial subtraction results in
numbers that are ‘easier’ to multiply it is a useful technique. e.g.

9960*9850

Step 1: This is one simplest form of multiplying two big numbers. Simply
subtract the two numbers by 10000.

Step 2: Now multiply the values that you get with each other and keep it as it is
unlike other cases.

Step 3: Now subtract the result of multiplicand that is 40 from the multiplier
that is 9850.
The answer will be 98106000.

So here we discussed some cool vedic maths tricks, especially the vedic math
multiplication strategies which will help you not just in school, but throughout
your entire life.
