COMPACTION

1) The results of a compaction test on a soil are set below.

Moisture content (%) 9.0 10.2 12.5 13.4 14.8 16.0

Bulk Density (Mg/m3) 1.923 2.051 2.220 2.220 2.179 2.096

Plot the dry density to moisture content curve and determine the maximum dry density and
the optimum moisture content (omc).

If the partyicle specific gravity of the soil was 2.68, determine the air void percentage at
maximum dry density. Plot the zero and 5% air voids lines.

What are the values of void ratio, porosity and degree of saturation for the soil at its condition
of optimum moisture content?

2) The results of a standard Proctor compaction test are as follows:

Moisture content (%) 5 8 9 11 12 15 20

Bulk density (kg/m3) 1890 2139 2170 2210 2219 2161 2069

Plot the curve of moisture content against dry density and determine optimum moisture
content and maximum compaction.

If the specific gravity is 2.70 plot the zero air voids and 10 percent air voids lines. Determine
the air void percentage at maximum dry density.

What are the values of void ratio, porosity and degree of saturation for the soil at its condition
of optimum moisture content?

3) In a standard compaction test on a soil the following results were obtained:

Moisture content (%) 6.8 8.5 9.4 10.2 11.3 12.5 13.6
Bulk density (kg/m3) 2070 2139 2187 2212 2228 2211 2193

(a) What is the optimum moisture content and maximum compaction?

(b) Find the percentage air voids at the maximum dry density and optimum moisture
content.
(c) Plot the percentage air voids line for the air voids found in part (b).
(d) Determine the percentage moisture content required to saturate the soil at its
maximum dry density.
(e) What are the values of void ratio, porosity and degree of saturation for the soil at its
condition of optimum moisture content?
4) The following results were obtained from a standard Proctor compaction test on a soil.

Mass (g) 2010 2092 2114 2100 2055

Water content (5) 12.8 14.5 15.6 16.8 19.2
The value of Gs is 2.67. The volume of the mould is 1 000 cm3.

(a) Plot the dry density-water content curve and give the optimum water content and
maximum dry density.
(b) Plot also the curves of zero, 5 and 10% air content.
(c) Give the value of air content at maximum dry density.
(d) What are the values of void ratio, porosity and degree of saturation for the soil at its
condition of optimum moisture content?

5) Soil has been compacted in an embankment at a bulk density of 2.15 Mg/m3 and a
water content of 12%. The value of Gs is 2.65. Calculate the dry density, void ratio, degree of
saturation and air content. Would it be possible to compact the above soil at a water content
of 13.5% to a dry denity of 2.00 Mg/m3?
