LEARNING FOCUS

Lesson 1:
Definition of a Trend

Humans are subjected to the effects of external influences. The so-called “bandwagon mentality” exists and
is a reality of the times. Sometimes, we tend to move towards where the majority are directed and we tend to decide
according to the impulse of the significant others. However, it is a natural course among humans to be swayed by
what is approved by the community. The existence of laws, mores, norms and morals are but guidelines set by the
majority.
Societies are constantly in a state of change. It is crucial to scrutinize how these things and events happen.
Social changes lead to development and progress. There are certain events that transpire within the society that
brings about the adoption or assimilation of innovations that can merge with the existing practices and trigger change
in the society and the lives of every individual.

A trend is a behavior or new way of doing things and it has a big impact on our society. It is a sequential
pattern of change in a condition, output, or process, or an average or general tendency of a series of data points to
move in a certain direction over time, represented by a line or curve on a graph.

A trend is an inclination to which a group of people tend to move. It is directed towards a certain change or
development that may involve practices, behavior, actions, events, technology and the like. Trends involve a
tendency to move upward or downward towards a certain course that may imply a progression or a regression in the
condition or a status of a certain subject which can happen in a shorter or longer span of time.

A fad is most of the time used interchangeably with a craze as both denote on extreme but short-lived
enthusiasm for an object, practice of specific behavior or an activity. Both usually appears suddenly and quickly
spread like wildfire and then in a span of days or months loses its popularity among its followers or believers.

A trend has a big impact in our society and it has the capacity to make big changes in our lives.
 Megatrends. They are a larger pattern of broad trends that reshape and transform our lives.
 Microtrends. It advocate localization as opposed to globalization, recognizing that people and communities have
never been more sophisticated and more knowledgeable about the choices they make in their everyday lives.
Social Trend

This movement participated in by which the society whether relevant or not as it is a reality of life as human
respond to stimuli whether it has to do with a type of music, fashion and event. Though social trends may not be
initiated by majority, still a greater number of people desire to join the movement.

Leg warmers for example were a trend during the 1980’s coupled with neon-colored clothing and a brush-up
hair. 1960s on the other hand created the bell-bottom jeans and symbols of peace. Every decade allows the
proliferation of a certain trend and later gives way to a new on with the beginning of a new decade. Technology for
instance as it progresses gives rise to beepers and wireless telephones which eventually was replaced by cellular
phones and other handled devices. Social media facilitated the creation of Facebook and Twitter which developed
new ways to connect with people in different geographical locations. The rise of social networking began a trend that
continuously evolves to provide instances communication between peoples.

Types of Trends

Trends can be categorized according to its longevity and pattern of movement. People can entertain and
follow the movement for a longer period of time as it sufficed their need while its patter can also follow a certain
change in its popularity.

 Trend Systematic is a persistent upward or downward patter of movement that happens during longer
period of time. This may include developments in technology, wealth and population count.
 Seasonal Systematic is a regular and periodic fluctuations with a one year or twelve months period which
may include weather conditions in a certain geographical location, changes in social practices and religious
rituals.
 Cyclical Systematic is a consistently repeating upward and downward movements entering its highest level
or peak which is a period of prosperity; contractions or period of recession; the level of tough or level of
depression; towards the level of expansion or recovery.
 Irregular Unsystematic is the erratic fluctuations that exist brought about by unforeseen events such as
natural calamities, major economic or political turmoil or events.

What Brings About Tends?

 Fundamental elements bring about change and development. Whether these elements drive towards
progression regression still they contribute to the onset of trends in the society.

 Human Needs motivate people to create and follow trends as this allows them to form greater relationships and
more positive human interaction. For instance, is the creation and use of social media accounts to further their
relationships with fellow users and enthusiasts.

 Drivers of Change initiates trends as there arises a need to change whether in a shorter or longer time span.
People are never satisfied with a consistent status as they continue to adopt things or elements that will
introduce change in their lives. This add spice and life to their everyday life.

 Innovations provide changes that leads to trends as people converge to adopt the same. Whether these
innovations serve a status symbol or make life more comfortable or even communication more instantaneous the
result is a trend.

The Process of Identifying a Trend

1. Trend analysis is the widespread practice of collecting information and attempting to spot a pattern, or trend, in
the information. It may used to predict future events or estimate uncertain events in the past.
2. Trend spotting is the identification of new trends or attempting to see the future.
3. Trend spotter is a person who notices and reports on new fashions, ideas, or activities that are becoming
popular.
4. Projecting Trends assumes the future will be a logical extension of the past.

Examples:
Twitter is a free social networking microblogging service that allows registered members to broadcast short posts
called tweets. Twitter members can broadcast tweets and follow other users' tweets by using multiple platforms and
devices.

Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos
and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. The site, which is available in 37
different languages, includes public features.

Difference between Fad and Trends

 Trends:
o Trends have a much longer lifespan than fads they can continue to be fashionable for years and
even decades. The primary difference between a trend and a fad is that trends have the potential
to be long-term influences on the market.

 Fad
o Typically spread quickly but disappear equally quickly. The easiest way to categorize a fad is one
word: short-lived.Typically, fads last for a total of one season. A fad is often referred to as “catching
on” with the larger population, but will often fade as quickly as it appeared. The easiest way to
remember a fad is through a simple alliteration: fads fade. Although engaging in fads can be fun,
they are often not worth investing a large amount of money or time.

Elements and Characteristics of a Trend

 Duration of time
o The lifespan of products or ideas that become trends do not disappear quickly. Trends have long
staying power and enjoy a long period of popularity.
 Acceptability
o Trends are popularly accepted by many industries and people.
 Cultural Basis
o A trend is rooted on the people's cultural traditions, beliefs, and values. A trend persists and
continues because people have seen it as part of a society's culture.
 Transitory Increase or decrease
o A trend shows a transitory increase or decrease of a particular idea, event or phenomenon.
