Facts, Syllabus and Pattern: What Is IMO?
What is IMO?
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the world championship mathematics
competition for high school students and is held annually in a different country.
The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has
gradually expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents.
The IMO board ensures that the competition takes place each year and that each host
country observes the regulations and traditions of the IMO.

Exam Pattern for IMO
For classes 1st to 4th
Students who qualify for the 2nd level of the exam include:
o Top 5% of students’, class wise, who appear for the 1st level exam.
o Class toppers from each participating school, where at least 10 students from a class
appear in the exam, and score 50% qualifying marks.
o In case registration is received section wise, students with highest marks, irrespective of
section will qualify for the 2nd level.
For section wise registrations, winner(s) of gold medal may not necessarily qualify for
the second level.
Students from classes 1 and 2 are not required to appear for the 2nd level exam and are
ranked based on their performance in the first level exam.
Registration for IMO
You have to register for the exam from your school itself, because IMO does not accept
individual participation from any other mode.
Prospectus, containing the registration forms, are sent to all schools registered with
SOF.
Schools not registered may also request a prospectus by sending an e-mail
at [email protected]/.
Schools must return the registration forms to SOF, duly filled in and completed in all
respects, by the due date.
Application Fee for IMO
A charge of Rs 125 (including 18% GST) towards cost of examination is payable by
each participant for schools in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal
If you are suffering from any major physical disability or if you are an Indian student
whose parent was martyred during defence operations, you are exempted from paying
the fee.
Further the school may collect an amount upto Rs 25 per student towards honorarium of
incharge, remuneration to teachers, study material supplied by SOF and other
miscellaneous expenses.
IMO admit card has details like your name, venue of the exam etc.
You will have to enter your exam roll number, date of birth, etc. to get the result.
How to prepare
Preparation Tips for IMO
Practice is the key: Practice as much as you can. 70% of your IMO preparation
comprises of practice.
Take All-India Level mock tests: Give time-bound mock tests in a completely exam-
like environment to improve your efficiency at attempting questions..
Clear all your doubts: Don't get stuck with doubts. Discuss and clarify them with
Subject Experts at Vedantu to get an instant reply.
Study from the best sources: NCERT and several recommended books for IMO are
the minimum resources you need. Vedantu offers the best study material from all over
the web to help you prepare better.
Revision is important: When you go through a formula or concept, maintain revision
notes in the form of bullet points. Revision will be useful when the exam is close and a
good revision pattern will take less time. Normally, without these notes, you would have
to go through the entire chapter to understand important points once again.
Sample Papers for IMO
Solving sample papers and previous year papers is not only advisable, but also
mandatory if you want to stay ahead of the stiff competition in IMO 2018. Solving sample
papers will help you to prepare for the expected paper and its pattern, while also
assisting you in learning efficient time management. You can also assess your own
performance by practicing sample papers and judge your level of preparations for IMO
2018.
Previous Years’ Papers for IMO
Practising previous years’ IMO papers is important as it helps you simulate the real
exam..
