I have completed BSc in Theoretical Mathematics from National University, Bangladesh in 2005
and MSc also in Mathematics from Jagannath University, Dhaka in 2006. I worked as a local
importing agent of Chan Sieh Ent. Co. Ltd. (a Taiwanese textile grade adhesive factory) to
promote their products in Dhaka city from 2007 to 2011. For professional development I
completed post graduated diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership from South Thames
College, London in 2013. As part of work placement, I joined in Hotel Travelodge, Covent
Garden branch in customer service and supervising. I came back in Bangladesh in 2014 and have
been working as supervisor in Hotel Sundarban, Dhaka since then.
Since I have been working in hotel industry for a significant amount of time, I was planning to
join a 5 star hotel in Dhaka. But working in such places requires different set of skills such as
dealing with local or international VIP customers, knowledge in hospitality and event
management (for govt. departments and top private companies) and also security management.
Work experience in a 2 star hotel doesn’t make me an ideal candidate. A Strategic Management
and Leadership diploma will not be much helpful either. It was targeted for Science or Arts
graduates who have no previous academic knowledge in Business Management. So, instead of
applying for jobs in 5 star hotels over and over without specialized qualification, I am planning
to complete a Masters degree in hospitality and tourism related field.
I found University of Hertfordshire MSc in International Tourism, Hospitality and Event
Management (Sandwich Program) suitable for my future career prospect for the following
reasons :
As part of Strategic Management and Leadership diploma, I completed ‘Strategic
Marketing’ course which was too generic in my case. I had to submit report and group
presentation on construction sector of London metropolitan area. I think ‘Marketing and
Technology in Tourism, Hospitality and Events’ is suitable for me as it is focused in a
specific industry.
Similarly, ‘Team building for Business Managers’ course of Strategic Management was
too broad. A 5 star hotel workforce is large and diverse. So, ‘People Management in
Tourism, Hospitality and Events Industries’ will be much more helpful for me.
Work placement will also be plus point. I can Use this opportunity to join a well reputed
hotel for a year and gain valuable work experience there. 5 star hotels in our country
prefer candidates who have work experience in English spoken countries.
‘Crisis, Risk and Recovery for Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management’ course will
be highly valuable for me as risk management and compliance issues are significant in a
third world country’s perspective.
I was also planning to apply in MA in Luxury Hospitality Management. But, analyzing their
course content it seemed to me that they put a bit more emphasis on Business Environment and
Designing Customer Experiences. I found University of Hertfordshire Program well balanced for
me. Since I already completed my previous Business Management degree in UK, I looked no
further than a well reputed British university for a specialized degree.
As I have already mentioned, my goal is to join a 5 star hotel in my country. I hope successful
completion of this course with work placement experience in a well known hotel will make me
strong candidate for that purpose.
