Week 3 - Assignment Solutions

The document provides solutions to assignment questions about electric vehicle performance calculations. For question 2.5a, the total energy consumed was 10.75 Wh, distance travelled was 657.91 m, and Wh/km was 16.35. For part b with a 5 degree slope, energy was 13.15 Wh, distance was 701.96 m, and Wh/km was 18.74. Question 3 calculates speeds, rpm, and gear ratios between different units of measurement for vehicle speed.

Week 3 - Assignment Solutions

Q 2.5. a. Prepare a spread sheet for 2-wheeler IDC using data in slide 39. Obtain the
traction Force, traction Power, and the torque required every second. Compute the
total energy consumed and the distance travelled. Obtain Wh/km for the vehicle.
Assume R=0.3
Ans.
Total energy consumed (Wh) = 10.75
Distance travelled (m) = 657.91
Wh/km for the vehicle = 16.35

Solution: Solution in spreadsheet shared

b. Now assume that at 100 seconds in the drive cycle, the vehicle moves at constant
speed, but climbs a slope of 5° for 10 seconds. The vehicle then goes to zero speed in
the next eight second, just like it does from 100 sec to 108 sec in IDC. Now compute
energy required, distance travelled and Wh/km, again assuming R=0.3
Ans.
Energy required (Wh) = 13.15
Distance travelled (m) = 701.96
Wh/km = 18.74

Solution: Solution in spreadsheet shared

Que 3.1) Assume a vehicle has rwheel of 0.3 m. Covert speeds of

a) 1000 rpm into kmph and m/sec

b) 2 m/sec into kmph and rpm
c) 80 kmph into m/sec and rpm
Ans:

a) 1000 rpm in kmph --- 113.0 to 113.1

1000 rpm in m/sec --- 31.4 to 31.5

b) 2 m/sec in kmph --- 7.2

2 m/sec in rpm --- 63.6 to 63.7

c) 80 kmph in m/sec --- 22.2 to 22.3

80 kmph in rpm --- 707 to 708

Solution:

(a) rwheel = 0.3 m; Rotations = 1000rpm = 16.67rps

Speed (mps) = rps * 2π rwheel = 31.42 mps

Speed (kmph)= Speed(mps)*3.6 = 113.09 kmph

(b) Speed (mps) = 2 mps

Speed (kmph) = Speed(mps)*3.6 = 7.2 kmph

rps = Speed(mps)/(2π rwheel ) = 1.06 rps

rpm = Speed(rps) * 60 = 63.66 rpm

(c) Speed (kmph) = 80 kmph

Speed (mps) = Speed (kmph)/3.6 = 22.22 mps

rpm = (Speed(mps)/rwheel ) * 9.55 = 707 rpm

Que 3.2) a) A vehicle needs to run continuously at 60 kmph and should have a peak torque of 150
Nm. A motor gives peak torque of 25 NM at 3000 rpm. What should be the gear ratio and
minimum tyre radius for the motor to be used by the vehicle?

Ans:

Gear ratio n:1, n is equal to ---- 6

Minimum tyre radius in m --- 0.31 to 0.32

Solution:

Vehicle Torque = Gear Ratio × Motor Torque

Vehicle Torque
Gear ratio (n) = Motor Torque
= 150/25 = 6

Vehicle Speed (kmph) 60

Vehicle Speed (mps) = 3.6
= 3.6 = 16.67 mps

Vehicle Speed (mps) = rps × 2π × r

Mptor rpm 300
Vehicle rpm = 𝑛
= 6
= 500

Vehicle Speed (mps) = (rpm/60) × 2 π × r = (500/60) × 2 π × r

16.67∗60
Hence r = 500∗2∗𝑝𝑖 = 0.318 𝑚
b) A EV battery has a capacity of 15 kWh. Assuming 0.9 DoD and 75% end of life, what is
the range that the vehicle (using 80 Wh/km) can support, when the battery is new. What
range will it support at the end of life? Assume, Auxiliary power used is 500 W
continuously, speed of 40kmph and the efficiency of motor and controller is 85% each.

Ans:

Vehicle range in km when Battery is new --- 105 to 125

Vehicle range in km at end of life of Battery --- 80 to 95

Solution:

Usable capacity of Battery when new = 15 × 0.9 kWh = 13.5 kWh

Usable capacity of Battery at End of Life = 15 × 0.9 × 0.75 kWh = 10.125 kWh

Max distance (km) that can be covered when new (without considering aux power) =
13.5∗1000∗0.85∗0.85
80
= 121.92 km

Max distance (km) that can be covered at EoL (without considering aux power) =
10.125∗1000∗0.85∗0.85
80
= 91.44 km

Now considering 500W continuous aux power

(13500−500∗𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑛 ℎ𝑟𝑠)∗0.85∗0.85
Distance driven (d in km) when new = d = 80
𝑑
(13500−500∗ )∗0.85∗0.85
40
d=
80

d = 109.55 km
(10125−500∗𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑛 ℎ𝑟𝑠)∗0.85∗0.85
Distance driven (d in km) when old = d = 80
𝑑
(10125−500∗ )∗0.85∗0.85
40
d= 80

d = 82.16 km
