Engine Cranks but Does Not Start

SMCS - 1000-035; 1450-035

Use this procedure to troubleshoot an engine that cranks but does not start.

Also use this procedure to troubleshoot an engine that cranks and starts but not within the time required for
Emergency Standby Operation.

Table 1
J1939 Code and Description Comments
3554-18
Engine Ventilation Status : Low The code is logged.
- moderate severity (2)

The code is set if an unburned gas purge is commanded and engine

speed is not detected.

Engine speed will not be detected for any of the following

conditions:
- Engine speed does not become non zero within one second of the
1664-31
initial crank command.
Engine Automatic Start Failed
- Starter system failure. The engine does not rotate during a crank
command.
- The engine is rotating but neither the camshaft nor the crankshaft
speed timing sensors provide a signal to the ECM.
The alarm output is activated.
The code is logged.

Probable Causes
Excessive load

Incorrect base timing

Timing pattern not locked

Fuel supply problem

Ignition system problem

If the engine does not start, a problem with the primary fuel supply or ignition system may be present.

Recommended Repairs

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes Codes Result: An associated
code is active.
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to the service
tool connector. Repair: Troubleshoot
any associated codes
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system before continuing with
for the event code. this test.

Result: A code is
active or logged.

Proceed to Test Step

2.

Result: No excessive
load on the engine.

Proceed to the next

step.

2. Check for Excessive Load Result: The engine

Excessive has an excessive load.
A. Ensure that the load is not excessive. If necessary, Load
disengage the driven equipment and test the engine. Repair: Remedy the
cause of the excessive
load.

If the problem is not

resolved, proceed to
Test Step 3.

Result: The Base

Timing is correct.

3. Check the Base Timing

Result: The Base
Base Timing
A. Verify that the base timing is correct. Refer to Systems Timing is not correct.
Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Ignition Timing - Adjust"
Repair: Correct the
Base Timing.

If the problem is not

resolved, proceed to
Test Step 4.

4. Verify Timing Pattern Speed/Timing Result: Both the

- Transformers replace the faulty
- Extenders component.
- Spark plugs

Inspect the ignition system for the following conditions:

1. Check the connection between the ignition transformer and
the extender. A loose connection can cause arcing and
misfires.

2. Check the connection between the extender and the spark

plug for a loose connection or for pin holes that are caused by
arcing. Both conditions can cause misfires.

3. Check the extender for corrosion on the spring. Corrosion

may cause arcing through the extender.

4. Check for corrosion on the terminal of the spark plug and

check for wear on the electrode. Both conditions can cause
misfires.
Excessive moisture can cause misfire.
Maintain the spark plug according to the engine Operation and
Maintenance Manual.

If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For
further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
