Design and Implementation of A Peer To Peer Network: Computer Networks Lab

This document summarizes a computer networks lab activity where the student: 1) Learned about the 7 layers of the OSI model and simulated a peer-to-peer network using Cisco Packet Tracer. 2) Designed a network layout plan for a two-floor structure using under 75 meters of cable between floors. 3) Implemented a working peer-to-peer network between two PCs with IP addresses of 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2, demonstrating how peer-to-peer networks distribute traffic across connected machines.

I. Objectives

1. To understand the OSI layers

2. To simulate a working peer to peer network using Cisco Packet Tracer
3. To design a peer to peer network with a cable layout plan.
4. To implement a working peer to peer network

II. Observation

The experiment has 3 parts, one is for making of OSI layer model, next is for the floor plan
of two floor structure and lastly, the peer to peer network plan.

Figure 1 Illustration of OSI Layer

The figure above shows the Model layer for OSI (Open Systems Interconnection). The
communications between a computing systems are split into seven different layers: Layers 1-7
(Physical, Data-link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application).Based on what I
observed from the experiment starting from Layer 1, the Physical layer transmits the bit streams
over the physical medium. Layer 2 defines the format of data on the network. Layer 3 decides
which physical path the data will take. Layer 4 transmits data including TCP and UDP. Layer 5
maintains connection and responsible for controlling ports and sessions. Layer 6 ensures the data
is included in a usable data encryption occurs. And Lastly, where Layer 7 can access the network
services.

Figure 2 Illustration of Network Layout Plan of Two-Floor Structure

This picture above shows the network layout plan of a two-floor structure. The layout
plan consists of a maximum of 75 meters to use. So, for the two-floor plan, the total is 68.25
meters. For the first floor, the PC is located at the lower right side of the floor plan so the cable
will use less cable to be connected to the second floor.

Figures 3. Peer to Peer Networks

As for the P2P Network, this are a group of computers that are linked together with the
same connection of the cross cable, with equal permissions and responsibilities for processing
data. In our experiment, we used 2 PC to be able to have a p2p connections and can ping both IP
addresses on both PC’s. the first IP address has 192.168.1.2 and the other PC comes with the IP
address of 192.168.1.1. Each connected machine has a similar as it “peers” and can be used for
the same purposes. The peer to peer network ensures that the network traffic does not stuck at
one device, since traffic handling is distributed across many computers.

III. Conclusion

For the first part of the experiment, each layer of the OSI model has a plan on sending it
first and received by the other end devices using of the process encapsulation and decapsulation.
Each layer builds a protocol data adding header. Encapsulation feature most of networking

models including both OSI and TCP/IP Protocols. For the peer to peer network experiment, the
peer to peer network eliminates the need for central servers allowing all computers to
communicate and share resources as equally divided. As for the Network floor plan, the cable
layouts are also part of the network floor plan since it is needed nowadays to the structures build.
