Melanoma Project

Melanoma is a dangerous form of skin cancer that begins in melanocytes, the skin cells that produce melanin. While less common than basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma is more likely to spread to other organs if not treated early. The document outlines the symptoms, risk factors, treatment options, and prognosis for melanoma at different stages. Early melanoma may only require removal of the cancerous area, while later stages involve more extensive surgery and sometimes radiation therapy. Prognosis depends on the stage, with higher stages being more difficult or impossible to cure due to melanoma's deadly nature.

MELANOMA: A

RARITY OF CANCER
By: Malik Farooq P-1
Skin Cancer- The most common form of cancer (in the US), skin cancer
forms on skin cells, usually caused by an overexposure to UV light (most
cases). Two of the most common types, basal cell and squamous cell
carcinomas, affect many in the US, but the third most common,
Melanoma, is arguably the more dangerous and death-causing cancer.
(Melanoma covers 1-2% of all skin cancers)

A BETTER LOOK WHAT IS

AT MELANOMA MELANOMA?
Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that
begins in the melanocytes, the area
where melanin is produced. While not
as common as basal cell or squamous
cell carcinoma, this type of skin cancer
is more dangerous, due to its ability to
spread to other organs rapidly. There
are four main types of melanoma.

ANATOMICAL PHYSIOLOGIC
SYMPTOMS AL SYMPTOMS
Anatomical symptoms include: Physiological symptoms include:
- Unusual Moles (Using ABCDE rule) - Feeling tired/unwell
- Change in size, shape, and/or color - Change in sensation (itchiness,
- Unexplained pain or hard lumps tenderness, pain)
- Usually occurs on existing moles - Tummy pain & oozing/bleeding of skin
- In form of hidden melanomas as well Usually in the early stages,
(not noticeable/unknown areas) melanoma is not noticeable* and
- Hard/Swollen Lymph nodes (adv. stg) doesn't cause much pain.

TREATMENT & RISK FACTORS

PROGNOSIS Risk factors consist of factors that make it more
likely for a person to get Melanoma. These
Depending on the stage of Melanoma, factors/types of people more likely to get
treatment/prognosis (steps) vary. The early Melanoma are:
stages of Melanoma consist of simple removal of - People who get excessive UV light (Radiation from
the cancer, or even the use of cream to cure the the sun)
cancer. On the other hand, higher stages of this - People with many moles and/or unusual moles
cancer relate to bigger surgeries, and even - Family history of Melanoma (increases chances)
radiation therapy to remove the cancer, usually - Fair skin (having less Melanin = less protection from
after it has spread. Due to the deadly nature, UV radiation = increased chances [usually light skin])
- Live closer to equator/higher elevation (more
higher stages are usually harder/impossible to
exposure to UV radiation = increased risk)
cure.
