Engineering Chemistry (TCH-101) Assignment-2 (Topic: Fuels and Calorific Value)

The document contains 5 questions regarding calculating the higher calorific value (HCV) and lower calorific value (LCV) of fuels using data from bomb calorimeter experiments. Question 1 asks to calculate the HCV and LCV using data on the temperature increase of water and the hydrogen content of a 0.90g fuel sample. Question 2 provides data to calculate the gross calorific value (GCV) and net calorific value (NCV) of a 0.95g coal sample. Question 3 asks to calculate the HCV using temperature increase data for a 0.72g fuel sample. Question 4 repeats the same calculation as Question 1 for another fuel sample. Question 5 asks to calculate the LCV

Assignment-2 (Topic: Fuels and Calorific Value)

Q1.In an experiment in a Bomb calorimeter, a solid fuel of 0.90g is burnt. It is observed that
increase of temperature is 3.8oC of 4000g of water. The fuel contains 1% of H. calculate
the HCV and LCV value (equivalent weight of water = 385g and latent heat of steam =
587 cal/g)

Q2.The following data are obtained in a Bomb Calorimeter experiment.

Weight of coal burnt = 0.95g Weight of water taken = 700g

Water equivalent of calorimeter = 2000g Increase in temperature = 2.48C
Acid correction = 60.0cal Cooling correction = 0.02C Fuse wire correction = 10.0cal
Latent heat of condensation = 587 cal/g

Calculate the GCV and NCV of the fuel if the fuel contains 92% of C, 5% of H and 3%
of ash.

Q3.On burning 0.72g of a solid fuel in a Bomb calorimeter, the temperature of 250g
of water is increased from 27.3oC to 29.1oC. If the water equivalent is 150g,
calculate the HCV of the fuel.

Q4.In an experiment in a Bomb calorimeter, a solid fuel of 0.90g is burnt. It is observed

that increase of temperature is 3.8C of 4000g of water. The fuel contains 1% of H.
calculate the HCV and LCV value (equivalent weight of calorimeter = 385g and
latent heat of steam = 587 cal/g)

Q5.Calculate LCV of a fuel which has 8.9% hydrogen and its HCV is 6500 cal/g (given latent
heat of steam =580 cal/g).
