Department of Energy Sciences and Mechanics: a σ σ σ K a σ N=50000

This document provides a mechanical design problem involving fatigue crack propagation analysis for a large plate with an initial crack. Students are asked to: 1) Determine the maximum stress value σmax that complies with a safety factor of at least 2 for crack propagation up to fracture over 50,000 load cycles. 2) Graph σmax as a function of the number of cycles N. 3) Graph the crack length a as a function of the number of cycles N from 0 to 100,000 cycles, using the determined σmax value. 4) Discuss the distinction between safety factors for crack propagation and fracture, and how the design could be improved.

Perform the analysis of the following exercise.

There is a crack at the initial length edge a i=3 mm on a large plate, which is subject to a cyclic
tension, σ ∞, which varies from σ min=0 a determined maximum value of σ max (R = 0). Assume
that the plate is large enough so that the configuration correction factor Q = 1.12 in the para
expression for K I for all crack length values a . The fracture resistance of the material is and its
tensile strength iσ y =1045 MPa s. In addition, the growth of the fatigue crack is described by
the Paris equation. It is desired to be able to apply N=50000 cycles the load to the structure
with an existing crack while maintaining a safety factor of at least 2 in the real life of
propagation of fatigue cracks up to fracture. That is, it is desired that the fatigue crack
propagation life for the chosen value of σ max be at least ≥ 100000 cycles.

• What is the maximum value of σ max complying with this restriction?

• Make a graph of σ max depending on N.

• For the chosen value of σ max, make a graph of the length of the crack, a (N) , in the range
0 ≤ N ≤ 100000 cycles.
• What conclusions do you draw about the distinction between the safety factors of fatigue
crack propagation and the fracture itself? How would this design improve? Argue
