Slow Lip Slurs: A Good First Slur

The document provides instructions for practicing slow lip slurs to build tone and technique on a brass instrument. It includes several exercises that involve smoothly transitioning between notes in a slurred manner either ascending or descending through the partials. The exercises start simply and gradually increase in difficulty, requiring flexibility and control when moving or leaping between notes in the upper and lower ranges of the instrument. Proper tone and clean execution are emphasized over speed.

Slow Lip Slurs

Few things help build tone and technique as well as slow lip slurs!
Most of these patterns are not completely written out. See the preface for instructions.

1. A Good First Slur

Strive for a smooth transition between notes. Avoid “bumping” into notes with the air as you ascend, or
unintentionally “sagging” as you descend.

2. Two Basic Flexibilty Patterns

Try buzzing on your mouthpiece as well. When you buzz, allow some glissando between the notes.
