Internship Background Information

I was given internship at Gadoon Textile Mills Ltd by ORIC office. This industry mainly converts
its raw materials like cotton and polyethylene into the final product Yarn which is then sent
to other industries to manufacture clothes of different qualities.
My internship duration was 6 weeks. In this time I covered the main technologies used in the
industry. We also gave sufficient time to the mechanical workshop present in the industry
and practiced different types of operations on milling machine, lathe machine and shaper
machine.
The weekly activities that we have done during the internship are listed as follows:

Week 01 (From 24 June To 29 June)

Goals:
• To have a general overview of the different machine systems in the industry
• To familiarize myself with work safety and health precautions in the industry

Activities:
• On first day all the internees were welcomed and briefed
• Met with Director Technical Sir Nadeem Riaz, set my goals and targets
• Referred to General Manager Sir Khalid Maqbool Cheema who was our supervisor
throughout the internship. He shared his expertise with us and informed us about
various engineering applications in the industry.
• Visited all the departments and had an overview of the machines
• We were given special briefing about work safety and health precautions
• Given the main purpose of each machine systems of the industry
The mill is comprised of the following machine departments:

• Blowing Machine Department

• Cording Machine Department
• Drawing Machine Department
• Roving Machine Department
• Ring Machine Department
• Winding Machine Department
• Quality Enhancement Cell
• Power Plant
• Mechanical Engineering Workshop

In the last two days we were introduced with the starting department of the industry that
was the Blowing Machine System. In this department raw material is collected and processed.
Raw material comes in the form of polyester and cotton in large bales which is then opened
and collected by pin beater which smoothly roll over its layer. The pin beater has pointed pins
which are spread along the surface area of a large cylinder. The cylinder smoothly rotates
over cotton layer and collect its feed layer by layer.

Week 02 (From 01 July To 06 July)

Goals:
• To learn about the remaining processes involved in blowing machine system
• Mechanical parts of the different machine, their maintenance and operation

Activities:
• In second week we completed the first two departments of the industry:
1. Blowing Department
2. Cording Department

Detail:
1. Blowing Department:
Main purpose of this department is to clean the raw materials and remove the heavy metal
parts and remove the moisture from the raw materials. Following machines are used in this
department.

• Blendomate
• Heavy Particle Separator
• Auto Blinder
• Multimexer
• Loptex
• Dustex

2. Cording Department:
Main purpose of this department is opening, cleaning and parallelization of the cotton raw
materials. Following machines are used:

• Taggering Roll
• Topset Cylinder
• Dropper
• Stipping Roll
• Crush Roll
• Coiler
The output from the blowing machine system is transferred to the carding machine system
through air duct system. Pipes system is categorized as red and green. The red pipes indicates
the useless material collected from blowing operation and are deposited in separate room
from where it is discharged. While the green pipe system contains purified cotton which is
ready for further process.

The cleaner cotton comes to the carding machine system where it is changed into tiny layers
by passing it through porous funnel made of steel. It is taken on a belt which is driven by two
pulleys.

Week 03 (From 08 July To 14 July)

Goals:
• To cover the drawing and rowing process in the ring department
• To inspect its internal mechanism, speed control methods, and transferring of torque
from main motor to other parts of the machine

Activities:
In 3rd week of my internship I covered the next two machine departments of the industry:
1. Drawing Process
2. Roving Process
Detail:
We have covered the following machines in these departments:

• Pre-Breaker
• Breaker
• Inter Breaker
• Finisher
• Comber Machine
• Reiter
• Drafting Machine
• Framcone cylinder
After taking materials from the coiler these processes takes rows of fiber from carder and
convert them to thicken loose yarn called sliver. It then rotates and coil the sliver in multiple
layers. Through coiling a thin and long material like yarn takes less space and do not get
tangled.
We also learned about speed control of the machines and power transmission from the main
motor to shafts and gear assemblies.

Week 04 (From 15 July To 21 July)

Goals:
• To learn the effects of using belts and chains in power transmission
• To introduce ourselves with air suction of left out particles
• To know the effect of twist on a thin material

Activities:
Today we practically inspected the application of belts and chains in torque transmission.
Belts are used in applications where we high speed for longer time period. On the other hand,
we need chains where we require good torque transmission but slower speed. Belt can loosen
with the passage of time and will need replacement.
Left out particles on the floor of machine system are picked by a moving air suction system
which works like a giant vacuum cleaner. The light particles are attracted because of pressure
difference.
Today we studied the effect of twisting on thin long material like fiber. We found out that
twisting increase strength because at molecular lever the parallel layer are wrapped around
each other and provide greater combined resistance to applied stress.
We learnt the generation different types of tasks from a single rotating shaft. A gear called
brake draft is connected to the main shaft which shift the rotation direction and controls
stretchness of fiber. Another wheel called twist wheel control the twisting of fiber.
Rowing machine system reduce the diameter of fiber by 30 times which increases the
strength of fiber because larger diameter fiber is compressed to a more thin and compact
form.

Week 05 (From 22 July To 27 July)

Goals:
• To learn the automation in winding machine system, use of robotics arms, application
of conveyer belts in industry, winding purpose

• Also to know about the benefits of using flexible machine system in manufacturing
and finally study the quality enhancement cell

Activities:
The winding department has much automation than the previous systems. Robotics arms are
used to replace cones for winding when one is finished. It moves in line and inspects each cell
one by one to check whether replacement is required. It basically implement the loop
command in programming and uses the ‘if , true, then, else’ statement.
Winding on the is done by mounting cone on a spindle. The benefit of winding is that such a
narrow and long fibre can be retrieved quite easily. Finishing of fibre is checked with the help
of a laser beam which gives message to robotic arm to replace a cone when the laser light
passes without any reflection from the fibre.
We practically saw the benefit of using flexible machine systems in industry. In a large
industry, various machines run round the clock and therefore get heated up. To give some
machines rest, yet keep the production running we need a flexible machine system which has
the flexibility to cater to our needs.
We learnt how a conveyer is used in industry to carry materials from one place to another.
The finished cone is discharged to a conveyer which carry it to its final destination which is
quality enhancement cell.
Finished product is checked for any faults in quality enhancement cell where is passed
through a chamber illuminated with infrared radiations. If there is any impurity in the product,
it shows different colour than the main product because of different wavelength reflection.

Week 06 (From 28 July To 03 August)

Goals:
• To know how to operate the machines in the mechanical engineering workshop of the
industry
• Study the materials used for making different parts
• To perform and know about the main operations of milling, lathe and shaper machines
Activities:
In the last week I have requested the supervisor to allow me to go to yhe workshop and have
