Do you understand an academic text well? As a college student, it is important to be


able to understand an academic text or even book. English for Understanding an Academic
Text book by Drs. Carsam, M.Ag explains how to understand an academic text starting from
the basic. Physically, this book has 110 pages. The cover is quite colourful but it looks like a
science book rather than a language book. This book has 25 cm length and 12 cm width. The
materials presented briefly and simply, there are also drills in every end of materials. Thus,
you need to read this review.

Broadly, English for Understanding an Academic Text book carries the basic
materials to understand an academic text starting from the parts of speech, cluster, phrase,
extended word, clauses, sentence, forming and the patterns of sentence in English, tenses, and
implementing to an academic text. There are also materials about how to translate and to
analyze academic readings, kinds of translation, and the scientific varied academic readings.
All these materials presented briefly and easy to understand. In the end of every material
there are some drills to evaluate readers understanding about the material.

Reviewing from the content of the book and the presentation of the materials, this
book is intended for college students who are not majoring in English, it is general. Referring
to the target reader of this book, the advantages of this book are the explanation that is easy to
understand because mostly it uses common words. It is not just about the materials but also
there are drills at the end of every materials, thus the readers can drill or evaluate their
understanding after studying the material in each unit of the book. The materials presented
sequentially, from the easiest to the hardest one. The weaknesses of this book are still many
typo and grammatical errors. There are so many units in this book, but unfortunately the
explanation not very complete.

Gap of this book with the other book is the level of understanding. The explanation of
the materials is clearer in advance level. The materials presented are more complete and the
examples or drills provided also more comprehensive.

In sum, having studied this book, understanding an academic text requires basic
knowledge and understanding about phrase, clause, sentence, structure, and translation, for
example. Moreover, it requires a lot of drills and evaluation to assess how far the ability or
readers understanding about the material has been learned. According to these statements, the
author recommends you to read “English for Understanding an Academic Text” book by Drs.
Carsam, M.Ag. as a learning reference in understanding an academic text.
