This lesson plan aims to teach students about the different types of sentences according to their structure. It includes objectives, subject matter, materials, procedures, evaluation, and assignment. The procedures involve introducing the topic through a group activity, presenting and discussing the four sentence types (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex), and having students synthesize the information. Students will then practice identifying sentence structures and writing a paragraph using the different structures.

 Discussion

T: There are four kinds of sentence according to its

structure namely: simple, compound, complex, and
compound-complex
Simple sentence – consists of only one independent
clause. It contains only one subject and one predicate.

Both the subject and the predicate may be compound.

Compound means having two or more similar parts.

The sentences with compound subjects and

compound verbs or predicate, have only one subject-
verb connections.

Compound subject: Lucille and Mikke went to the

plaza

Compound verb: The audience cheered and

applauded the play.

Compound predicate: The rain fell and flooded the

fields.

Compound subject and Compound Predicate: Angel

and Christine sing a song and dance at the concert.

Compound sentence – consists of two or more

independent clauses. The parts of compound
sentences are put together with:

 a comma
 a coordinating conjunctions (and, but, nor,
for, or)
 a semicolon

Conjunctive adverbs (then, however, moreover,

hence, consequently, etc.) are also used to join the
parts of a compound sentence. The conjunctive
adverb is preceded by a semicolon.

Examples:

The original ancestor of many languages is called

Indo-European, but no written documents exist in this
language.

Gary went to Davao and I went to Japan.

The horn of a rhinoceros is not a real horn; it is a

closely packed bundle of hair.

Complex sentence – consists of one independent

clause and at least one dependent clause which is
introduced by subordinating conjunctions. In a
complex sentence, the subordinate clause is always
used as a noun or a modifier. If it is used as a
modifier, the subordinate clause modifies a word in
the main clause.

Examples:

When you do calisthenics, your bones become denser

and less prone to osteoporosis and injury.

If you goal is weight loss, exercise at low or

moderate intensity for longer periods.

Exercise at low or moderate intensity for longer

periods if your goal is weight loss.
Compound-complex sentence – consists of two or
more independent clauses and at least one dependent
clause.

Example:

Yoga is an ancient Indian discipline that links

stretching exercises, breathing, and meditating
through the repetition of a series of poses while Tai
Chi is a slow-motion Chinese martial art designed to
increase the chi or life energy.
