1a: Coloumb's Law and Charge: Worksheet 1

The document contains 6 questions regarding Coulomb's Law and electrostatic forces between charged particles. Question 1 asks to rank pairs of charged spheres based on the magnitude of charge transferred and charge left on positively charged spheres. Question 2 asks about the net electrostatic force on a central particle surrounded by two charged rings. Question 3 asks about the charge transferred in a lightning bolt current over time. Question 4 asks to calculate the electrostatic force between two charged particles separated by a distance. Question 5 asks for the distance needed between two charges to produce a given electrostatic force. Question 6 asks for the total charge of a mass of electrons.

Worksheet 1
1. The figure below shows three pairs of identical spheres that are to be touched together and then separated.
A. Rank the pairs according to the magnitude of the charge transferred during touching, greatest first.
B. Rank the pairs according to the charge left on the positively charged sphere, greatest first.

2. In the figure below, a central particle of charge –q is surrounded by two circular rings of charged particles. What
are the magnitude and direction of the net electrostatic force on the central particle due to the other particles?
(Hint: Consideration of symmetry can greatly reduce the amount of work required here.)

3. In the return stroke of a typical lightning bolt, a current of 4.6 x 104 A exists for
41 µs. How much charge is transferred in this event?
4. A particle of charge +3.90E-6 C is 16.8 cm distant from a second particle of
charge -1.24E-6 C. Calculate the magnitude of the electrostatic force between the
particles.
5. What must be the distance in meters between point charge q1 = 29.4 µC and
point charge q2 = -52.5 µC for the electrostatic force between them to have a
magnitude of 7.65 N?
6. What is the total charge of 83.3 kg of electrons?
