Electrical Circuits Lab 0905212: Inductance, Capacitance I-V Relations

This document summarizes an electrical circuits lab experiment on inductance, capacitance, and transients in RL and RC circuits. The experiment has two parts: [1] measuring the inductance-current and capacitance-voltage relationships, and [2] analyzing the transient responses of RL and RC circuits. In part one, students use oscilloscope measurements to characterize an inductor and capacitor. In part two, they construct and analyze RL and RC circuits using square wave inputs to observe the transient responses.

Part one: Inductance and Capacitance Voltage-Current Relations.
 1.1 Inductor Test: (Practical)

1- Use DMM to measure the DC resistance RL at 400-mH setting…………

RL = Rs = 50 Ω L = 400 mH

Period of input Vs (t) (T )=

2- Make an accurate sketch of both signals showing values of time and amplitude for (Ch1,Ch2)

Insert Figure Here (Osicillscope)

3- Calculate (L / RL ), then compare with the value of (T/2).

L / RL =

T / 2 = (T: input signal period)

 1.2. Capacitor Test (Practical)

RC = Rs = 500 Ω C = 0.02 µF

Period of input Vs (t) (T )=

1- Make an accurate sketch of both signals showing values of time and amplitude for (Ch1,Ch2).

Insert Figure Here (Osicillscope)

2- Calculate (Rc*C ), then compare with the value of (T/2).

Part Two: RL & RC Circuit Transients
 2.1 RL-Circuit Transient Tests:

 Construct the RL circuit of Figure, using R= 1 K ohm’s L = 1 H. Use a 100-Hz

symmetrical square wave from the FG, with voltage = 4 Vp-p.
1- Measure the DC resistance of the inductor and the actual value of R with an Ohmmeter
and calculate the value of (τ).

L
Rg RL R (measured) τ= T/2
RL+ Rg+ R

50 Ω

2- Make an accurate sketch of VL(t) , then calculate ( τ ) using the 63% change criterion.

Insert Figure Here (Osicillscope) Insert Figure Here (tinkerCAD)

3- Record the measured value of τ =…………………………………………………….

 2.2.RC transient Tests:
 For the RC circuit shown in Fig .Use a 100-Hz symmetrical square wave from the FG,
with voltage = 4 Vp-p.

 Select R = 100 K Ω and C= 10 nF

1. Measure the actual value of resistance R with an ohmmeter and calculate the theoretical
value of the time τ = RC.
R Measured = …………………………………………………

τ = RC = ……………………………………………………..

2. Make an accurate sketch of Vc(t) , then calculate ( τ ) using the 63% change criterion.

Insert Figure Here (Osicillscope) Insert Figure Here (tinkerCAD)

3- Record the measured value of τ =…………………………………………………….
