The normal consistency of Portland cement is the minimum amount of water needed to complete the chemical reaction between cement and water, typically 25-35% of the weight of cement. The normal consistency test uses a Vicat apparatus to determine this amount by measuring the penetration of a plunger into a cement paste sample over time. The test involves mixing a sample of cement and an estimated consistency amount of water, then measuring penetration of the plunger after specified intervals to identify the percentage of water that allows penetration to the 5-7mm mark, in line with IS code 4031 specifications.

NORMAL CONSISTENCY OF PORTLAND CEMENT
Consistency is the minimum quantity of water required to be mixed with cement so as to
complete chemical reaction between the two. The normal consistency for an ordinary Portland cement is about 25% - 35% of water.
Reasons on Why Normal Consistency Varies
-Weather conditions -Excessive amount of silica -Fineness of cement -Not all cement have the same consistency
Normal Consistency Test of Cement
-IS : 4031 - PART4 - 1988 VICAT APPARATUS test -to test or determine the amount of water content that is to be added in cement. -to attain standard consistency or normal consistency of cement.
FORMULA (CONSISTENCY): CONSISTENCY % = Weight of water added / Weight of Cement x 100
Cement Consistency Test with VICAT Apparatus
-The main objectives is to find the required amount of water to form a cement paste as specified by IS CODE 4031 (PART4 - 1988) which the VICAT plunger will penetrate to 5-7mm point to the bottom of the VICAT mold. Required Apparatus Weighing Balance of 1000g with 1g Accuracy VICAT Apparatus
VICAT Mold Measuring Cylinder 200 mL
Glass Plate Hand Towel
Procedure for Consistency of Cement
1. Take 400g of cement and place it in a bowl or tray. 2. Assuming that consistency would be 29.5% since we are taking OPC. This is trial and error method. 3. Take 29.5% of water that means (400x29.5%) = 118g of water. 4. Mix the water with cement and wait for 3-5 minutes. 5. Fill the VICAT mold with the cement paste. 6. Ensure to compact the paste well after filling the mold. 7. Fill the cement paste to the top of the mold. Remove the excess paste by the trowel. 8. Now place the mold at the VICAT apparatus. 9. Removed the plunger and allow it to penetrate through the paste. 10. After removing wait for 3 seconds. 11. Note down the reading on the VICAT measuring scale.
