Reaction Paper 4 - Naturalism

However, the author believes naturalism is too narrow as a sole philosophy for education since it only focuses on the intellectual and not the spiritual, and discounts the possibility of anything supernatural.

Naturalism as a philosophy posits that all objects and events are capable of being accounted for by
scientific explanation. This also considered as the oldest philosophy in the western world. For those who
subscribe to this belief, there is no room for the supernatural.

Though many thinkers have made contributions and views about naturalism, those made by Jean
Jacques Rossueau are the most applicable in the field of education.

Rossueau established three principles of teaching anchored on this philosophy:

1. The Principle of Growth which suggests that education should be outlined in the order of
nature; need, activity, experience, and knowledge. It is noteworthy that Rossueau is putting
forward the idea that teachers should only be facilitators of learning.

2. The Principles of Student Activity, nothing should be done to the student that he can do himself.

3. The Principle of Individualization, student is not to be adjusted to his education but his
education is to be adjusted to his needs.

On my personal view, education cannot be purely based on naturalism as a philosophy as it only seeks to
cultivate the intellectual side of the student and tends to downplay the importance of his spiritual side.
It may also be a narrow view to hold that nothing exists beyond nature.
