2006 Balkan MO: Contributors: Arne, Silouan, Valentin Vornicu, Harazi

This document contains a summary of problems presented at the 2006 Balkan Mathematics Olympiad including: 1) Proving an inequality involving reciprocals of positive real numbers. 2) Proving lines determined by points on a triangle's circumcircle and points intersecting the triangle's sides pass through the same point. 3) Finding all triplets of positive rational numbers satisfying an integer condition. 4) Determining values of a that result in a periodic sequence defined by splitting terms by parity and adding an integer m.

1 Let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Prove the inequality

1 1 1 3
+ + ≥ .
a (b + 1) b (c + 1) c (a + 1) 1 + abc

2 Let ABC be a triangle and m a line which intersects the sides AB and AC at
interior points D and F , respectively, and intersects the line BC at a point E
such that C lies between B and E. The parallel lines from the points A, B, C
to the line m intersect the circumcircle of triangle ABC at the points A1 , B1
and C1 , respectively (apart from A, B, C). Prove that the lines A1 E , B1 F
and C1 D pass through the same point.

3 Find all triplets of positive rational numbers (m, n, p) such that the numbers
1 1 1
m + np , n + pm , p + mn are integers.

Valentin Vornicu, Romania

4 Let m be a positive integer and {an }n≥0 be a sequence given by a0 = a ∈ N,

and ( an
if an ≡ 0 (mod 2),
an+1 = 2
an + m otherwise.

Find all values of a such that the sequence is periodical (starting from the
beginning).
