A World Without Wa1

The document discusses the possibility of a world without war. It acknowledges that war has been a part of human history and nature, due to competition for resources and social status between individuals and groups. However, it notes that violence has significantly declined over the past 20,000 years as group sizes have increased. Larger groups mean less external competition between groups. Therefore, to reduce violence, the focus should be on forming the largest social group possible through global cooperation and politics. Failure to do so risks future world wars being fought with more primitive weapons.

A World without war

- Akshit Mahendru

A world without war, its hard even to imagine. Humans have history
of wars and battles. So, imagining a world where no warfare is
practised. Okay, I agree. Sounds too good to be true! Let us change
our approach to the problem.
We all had studied mathematics or at least tried at some part of our
life, right? In mathematics, if we cannot assign zero to some variable,
we try to keep that value near zero or mathematically we use limit
tends to ZERO. That is all we must do.
However, we must answer some questions before we can jump to any
conclusions. For example: Why is warfare part of human nature? Well,
I believe there are number of reasons. First, and the most obvious
reason is that everyone practices warfare. Every society from history
almost up to the including current day practices warfare. Another
reason why war is a part of human nature is because humans belong
to animal kingdom and in animal kingdom, individual animals of every
species compete with all other individuals for food, territory, or maybe
social status. We are just the same. The only difference is that we are
primates. We have got the ability to form larger groups. So, all that
war is the individual competition that we see throughout the animal
kingdom times up by our ability to build bigger groups.
Now, to free the world from war after that we know that war is a part
of us. We must look right across history. So, when you go back 20,000
years and come back to the current day. If you have looked closely,
there are two big trends that come out. One is a massive decline of
violence, from stone age through to the present date today is the
safest time without fail to be alive. The other macro trend is ever
increasing group size. When one group is fighting another in the war,
effectively it is the outside of the group that are fighting and bigger
the groups are, more peaceful is the interior. However, there is this
strange statistical relationship that groups tend to go war with each
other at the same rate irrespective of their size. So, that means if we
have larger group, we have less groups.
If we want to rid the world of violence, then we need to focus on
forming the biggest social group possible and of course that means
global politics.
Global Politics is the future and warfare need to be stopped. If we fail,
I do not know how World War III will happen, but I am sure if there
will be a World War IV then it would be fought with stick and stones.
