Letter of the Week

Aa
I hope you enjoy this free download! If you find it
works well in your classroom, please check out my
Letter of the Week COMPLETE curriculum! It
follows the exact same format of every letter and
comes with a bonus pack of Letter Roads for
centers.
Day 1: Letter Introduction
Introduce today’s letter by showing the students the following
letter poster. Demonstrate the letter’s name and sound(s), and
have students repeat the sound the letter makes.

Attach the letter poster to your doorframe, where students will

practice saying the “password” when leaving the room this week.

The password is the letter name and its sound (“e says eh”).

Students repeat the password each time they leave the room in a
line for the week.

Consider hanging old posters in other places in the room that

students spend time : above the sink, in your classroom bathroom,
etc.
Day 2: Letter Moves
Review the letter and letter sound from
yesterday.

Point out the picture on the letter poster.

The picture will remind students of the letter
and will have a matching motion.
Letter: A
Motion: Students pretend to hold an apple in
their hands. They bring their hands towards their
mouths as if they were going to take a bite of an
apple and make the /a/ sound
Day 3 Mystery Box
Create a box for students that is difficult to see inside and has a
narrow opening. A square Kleenex box is just the right size!

Decorate the outside of the box to make it exciting & colorful.

Each week, gather a few small items that begin with the letter of
the week. Pass the box around, and have each student draw out
an object and say what it is, then replace the object and continue
passing the box until every student has a turn.

Ask students if they can think of other objects that could have
been included. After the activity, I always add my box to the
discovery center!

A suggested list of items for this week’s letter is listed on the

next page!
Mystery Box: Suggested Items

• Apple
• Alligator
• Acorn
• Airplane
• Anchor
• Apron
• Avocado
• Angel
Day 4: Letter Show & Tell
Recite this poem together before students begin sharing the items
they brought from home:

___ is our letter of the week!

What’s in your bag?
Let’s take a peek!

There is a copy of the poem to display on the next page. I suggest

laminating it and writing the letter at the top each week.

If you have time, you may even want to repeat the poem before
each student shares:

___ is our letter of the week!

What’s in Kyle’s bag?
Let’s take a peek!
__ is our letter of
the week!
What’s in your bag?
Let’s take a peek!
Day 5: Letters & Technology

After a week of learning a particular letter, I

always show Sesame Street letter clips from
their website, and allow my students to play
the letter game from Starfall if one is
available.

If you do not have access to either of these

programs, creating a list of words and names
on an anchor chart with student input is also
a lot of fun!
Center Day 1: Play Dough Mats

Put these mats in your play dough center

for students to practice forming the letters.
They look great laminated on neon/bright
paper!

I also add a letter cookie cutter to my play

dough center each week. If you have access
to these, the students love them!
Can you make the letter?
Center Day 2 Writing Cards

Let students practice writing words that begin with your letter
of the week with these four word cards!

3 ways to use:
1. Display as a poster and rotate out weekly
2. Laminate word cards, punch holes in them, and put on a ring
so they can stay all year
3. Cut down and glue into a book of spiral index cards, creating
a year-long book

hallway. You will need extra supplies not included in
the pack to complete Table Time activities!

Which Apple Did I Like Best?

Students will practice writing their names

and a color word.
