Distance Between Two Points Using Coordinate System

This document discusses trigonometry and includes the following: 1) It defines trigonometry as the measurement of triangles, usually studying the sides and angles of triangles and points on a unit circle. 2) It provides definitions for key trigonometry terms like tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant. 3) It includes problems finding distances between points, determining if points lie on a straight line, and finding coordinates of missing points.

TRIGONOMETRY

DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO POINTS USING COORDINATE SYSTEM

1. Find the distance between the points (4, -2) and (6, 5).
2. By addition of line segments show whether the points A(-3, 0), B(-1, -1) and C(5, -4) lie on a straight line.
3. The vertices of the base of an isosceles triangle are (1, 2) and (4, -1). Find the ordinate of the third vertex if
its abscissa is 6.
4. Show that the points A(-2, 6), B(5, 3), C(-1, -11) and D(-8, -8) are the vertices of a rectangle.
5. Find the point on the y-axis that is equidistant from (6, 1) and (-2, -3).
B. Find the distance between each of the following pairs of points. (5 points each)
1. (-5, 6) and (4, -2)
2. (8, 3) and (-5, 4)
3. (-1, 7) and (2, -1)

C. The midpoint of the line segment joining the point (-1, 2) to the point M is (7, –1). Find the coordinates of
the point M.

Introduction to Trigonometry
1-10.Fill in the correct word in each blank.
______________ the measurement of triangles; it is usually studied as measurements of sides and angles of
triangles and as points on a unit circle.
Trigonometry is derived from the Greek words:
______________ means three
______________ means sides
______________ means measure
______________ the Greek astronomer in the second century of B.C who compiled a trigonometric table that
measured the length of chord subtending a various angles in a circle of a fixed radius r.
______________ can be defined as the union of two rays with a common endpoint.
______________ rotation if the angle has a positive measure.
______________ rotation if the angle has a negative measure.
______________ is when a vertex of an angle is at the origin of the coordinate plane and its initial side
coincides with the positive side of the x-axis.
______________ an angle that is greater than 180° and less than 360°.
Determine the quadrant in which the terminal side of the angle lies.
