What? Authors Talk About The Relation And: Extreme Perception and Animal Intelligence

The authors discuss the relationship between exceptional animal perception and animal intelligence, giving examples of seizure-alert dogs that can detect seizures and Clever Hans the horse that could respond to mathematical questions. They argue that while some behaviors are instinctive, animals that can understand their environment and solve new problems display intelligence, and intelligence in animals can be defined similarly to human intelligence as using skills flexibly in different situations.

By Huaman Llanos Alex

In the reading Extreme Perception and Animal Intelligence,

authors Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson discuss about
the relation and differences between the exceptional perception
of animals and animal intelligence. Authors state that animals
that display a deep understanding of the world around them are
plentiful.
Authors use some examples to explain that many animals’
actions show great intelligence, not just instinctive behavior. The
first example is about Seizure alert dogs which can predict a
seizure before it starts, they use their extreme perception to
solve problems. Also, one study found that there are a number
of dogs that were trained as seizure response dogs, they can help
a person once a seizure has begun, but some of these dogs can
detect a seizure perceiving sings and nobody knows how they do
this because to recognize sings are difficult.
The next example is about Clever Hands, a horse whose owner
thought he could count and answer some mathematical
questions. Although, a psychologist showed that Hans was not
really counting, and he discovered that Hans could answer the
question understanding and perceiving his owner’s tiny
movements. Psychologists use Han’s case in order to be careful
in attributing intelligence to animals, but the fact to detect
human signs make Hans an intelligent animal.
So, animals show intelligence when they use and train by
themselves their special skills in order to solve or take control of
new situations. In conclusion, we can define animal intelligence
the same way we define human intelligence: Being able to use
new skills in different situations.
