1. The document summarizes an EE lab experiment on measuring reflection coefficient, return loss, and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) using a slotted line and probe detector. 2. Students measured the VSWR of resistive loads and horn antennas by finding the ratio of maximum to minimum currents on the slotted line. 3. A method for measuring higher VSWR involved plotting the position of minima and using the width between them to calculate VSWR based on the guide wavelength.

Objective
• Learn about definition of voltage standing ratio and its relation to reflection coef-
ficient
• Learn how to measure VSWR using a slotted line and probe-detector
• Learn about the method used to measure high values of VSWR

Tasks
1.
Imax = 4.7mA, Imin = 3.5mA
q
Resistive Load T ermination = V SW R S = Imax /Imin = 1.16
Ref lected Coef f ecient = |Γ| = (S − 1)/(S + 1) = 0.07
Ref lected P ower % = 100|Γ| = 0.548
Return Loss = 10 log Pr /Pi = 20 log |Γ| = −23.1dB

2. Measurement of VSWR of Horn Antennas

Imax = 4.8mA, Imin = 3mA
q
Resistive Load T ermination = V SW R S = Imax /Imin = 1.26

3. Measurement of larger values of VSWR by plotting around minimum method

Imin = 0.7mA
x1 = 35mm, x2 = 38mm
d = x2 − x1 = 3mm
For Lambda
1st minimum = 18mm, 2nd minimum = 36mm
λg = 2 ∗ (2nd minimum − 1st minimum) = 36mm
1
V SW R S = 1 + = 3.36
sin2 ( πd

Conclusion
The VSWR of wave-guide components has been measured using a wave-guide slotted line
to measure the ratio of maximum to minimum electric fields produced in the standing
wave pattern set up by the components.
Components with a VSWR close to 1 have very low reflection coefficient and present
a good match to their wave-guide feed.
A method for measurement of large values of VSWR based in determining the rel-
ative width about an electric field minimum has also been undertaken. Both methods
assumed a square law for the diode detector. Measurements of VSWR independent of
diode detector characteristics may be made by measuring the ratio of Emax /Emin using
a precision attenuator.
