HW - 7 Sol PDF

This document contains instructions for homework problems in a structural dynamics course. It includes 4 problems: analyzing the motion of a building subject to ground motion using degrees of freedom; deriving equations of motion for a distributed mass/stiffness system; repeating an example of deriving equations of motion for a beam-mass system considering second order effects; and using MATLAB to solve problems and plot results.

Homework #7 – Assigned 10/30/2019 - Due 10/08/2018 at 5:00PM

Problem 1 – Chopra 9.19

Problem 2 - Consider the motion of the building below. It can be modeled as a lumped stiffness,
distributed mass system. Use u and θ as the chosen degrees of freedom. Assume small rotations, but do
not neglect the second order effect of gravity on the building mass.
(a) Use the equations of dynamic equilibrium to find the equations of motion for the structure.
(b) Find the equations of motion when the ground experiences a horizontal ground motion z(t).

Hint: You can use four equations of equilibrium for this problem. One for the horizontal behaviors in
the base and three for the top of the building.

Problem 3 - Consider the distributed mass/stiffness system below. The uniform bar is attached to a rigid
support at x = 0, and it is attached to a point mass and a linear spring at L. The bar undergoes axial
deformation u(x,t) that is to be approximated by:
u(x,t) = ψ1(x) u1(t) + ψ2(x) u2(t)
where ψ1(x) = x/L and ψ2(x) = (x/L)2
Write the equations of motion in the form [M]{𝑢𝑢̈ } + [K]{u} ={p(t)}
x u(x,t) m1

Problem 4 – Repeat the example presented during Class 16 (shown

support at the base and a lumped mass at the top. For this problem, do
consider the second order (P-Δ) effects of the mass and self-weight of
the beam. Again, let the horizontal deformation u(x,t) be approximated
by: ρ, A, E, I
u(x,t) = ψ1(x) u1(t) + ψ2(x) u2(t) Constant
where ψ1(x) = x/L and ψ2(x) = (x/L)2 L
Derive the equations of motion in the following form: u(x,t)
[M]{𝑢𝑢̈ } + [K]{u} + [KG]{u} = { p(t)}
x

Note: when using MATLAB – provide your i) source code, ii) output (if any), and ii) the appropriate
plots.
