East West University: Experiment No 1

This document summarizes an experiment conducted using Cisco Packet Tracer to prototype a network. The experiment involved setting up a network topology with 5 PCs connected to each of two Cisco 2950T switches using straight-through cables. The PCs were configured with IP addresses on the same subnet. Connectivity between a PC on one switch and a PC on the other switch was tested using ping commands, with successful pings indicating the network configuration was valid. The objective of prototyping the network using Packet Tracer was met.

Cisco Packet Tracer:
Packet Tracer is a cross-platform visual simulation tool designed by Cisco Systems that allows users to
create network topologies and imitate modern computer networks. The software allows users to simulate
the configuration of Cisco routers and switches using a simulated command line interface. Packet Tracer
makes use of a drag and drop user interface, allowing users to add and remove simulated network devices
as they see fit. The software is mainly focused towards Certified Cisco Network Associate Academy
students as an educational tool for helping them learn fundamental CCNA concepts.

Objective:
Prototype a network using Packet Tracer

Step 1: Set up the network topology

a) Add 5 PCs and a Cisco 2950T switch and another 5 PCs with a Cisco 2950T switch
b) Using straight-through cables connect PC0 to interface Fa0/1 on switch0 to interface
Fa0/1 accordingly other 4 pc is connect with the switch0 and PC5 to interface Fa0/1 on
switch1 to interface Fa0/1 accordingly other 4 pc is connect with the switch1
c) Configure these pc. For example, configure PC0 using the Config tab in the PC0
configuration window:
1. IP address: 192.168.100.1
2. Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Step 2: Test connectivity to from PC0 to PC7
a) Use the ping command to test connectivity.
1. Click PC0
2. Choose the Desktop tab
3. Choose Command Prompt
4. Type ping 192.168.100.7 and press enter
b) A successful ping indicates the network was configured correctly and the prototype
validates the hardware and software configuration. A successful ping should be resemble
the below output:

Command Prompt
Packet Tracer PC Command Line 1.0
PC>ping 192.168.100.7

Pinging 192.168.100.7 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.100.7: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=128

Reply from 192.168.100.7: bytes=32 time=0ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.100.7: bytes=32 time=0ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.100.7: bytes=32 time=0ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 192.168.100.7:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 21ms, Average = 5ms

Discussion:
Through this experiment we learnt about packet tracer. We have had some ideas about HUB,
Switch and router. We also learnt about three connection cables and differences. Lastly, we
applied some devices in packet tracer and connected them through wire.
