Defining Values

• Value represent basic conviction that a specific


mode of conduct or end state of existence is
personally or socially preferable to an opposite
or converse mode of conduct or end state
of existence.
• Values are stable enduring beliefs about what is
worthwhile that influence thought and behaviour.
• Values are learned ,beginning soon after birth
,as parent and others indicate that certain
behaviour are good & other are bad.

• Values are tinged with moral flavour ,involving an
individual’s judgment of what is right ,good or 
desirable. Thus value :

1.Provide Standards of Competence & morality.


2.Are fewer in number than attitudes.
3.Transcend specific objects ,situations or persons

4.Are relatively permanent & resistent to change.


5.Are most central to the core of a person.

Types of Values

•  As early classification of values was developed


by Gordon Allport and his associates.
• Their categories include the following:
1.Theoretical – Values the discovery of truth and
emphasizes critical and rational approaches to
problems.
2. Economic – Values utility and practicality
emphsizes standard of living.
3. Aesthetic – Values form ,grace & harmony and
emphasizes the artistics aspects of life.

4. Social – Values love of people and
altruism and emphasizes concern
for others.
5. Political – Values power ,position and
innfluence and emphasizes competition
and winning.
6. Religious – Values unity and people’s
relationship to the universe & emphasizes
high deals and the search for the purpose
of being on earth.
