 Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) as an
apex national body, has the objective of
organizing, supporting and providing a base for
expeditions for mountaineering, skiing, rock
climbing, trekking at high altitudes and to
promote, encourage, support and execute
schemes for related adventure activities and
environmental protection work in the Himalaya.

 IMF co-ordinates climbing in the Indian
Himalaya, organizes national and international
conferences, training / environment-cleaning
camps and climbing competitions.
 IMF is closely associated with the Ministries of
Sports, Home, Defence, Tourism and
Environment of the Government of India.

 Auditorium: IMF has a 200 capacity air-
conditioned auditorium called Sarin Hall where
film/slide shows, lectures and seminars are
held.
 Dormitories IMF has three dormitories having a
capacity to accommodate 10 persons in each

 A canteen in the Complex provides messing facilities
for Indian and foreign mountaineers and trekkers
 Sport Climbing Wall
 Sport Climbing wall is available from Tuesday to
Sunday . Timings are: 9.00 a.m to 1.00 p.m and
4.00 p,m. to 8.00 p.m. at Rs 150 /-per session. For
groups(minimum 30), activities are available viz.
Sport Climbing, Burma Bridge, Tyre Swing,

 One of the largest trekking maps ever created on
the Indian Himalaya is on display at the IMF.

 The rate will be Rs 550/- per day per student for
Special Adventure and Rs.800/- per day per student
for Special Skiing Course.
 The course can be conducted at Pahalgam, Sanasar,
Bhaderwah, Gulmarg and Leh.
 The skiing course dates are subject to change,
keeping in view the weather and snow conditions.
Charges for Special Mountain Courses at Leh will be
different as in Pahalgam, Sanasar & Bhaderwah.

 The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering was founded
in the year 1965 at Uttarkashi, in memory of
Jawaharlal Nehru, who was a mountain lover. The
Institute has a peaceful environment and beautiful
natural surroundings.
 The Institute is registered under the Registration
Act No.XXI of 1860.
 The chief concern of the institute is to offer
practical and theoretical training to people on
adventure sports without causing any harm to the
environment.
Aim
 The aim of the Institute is to introduce and
initiate young men, women and school children
to the mountains and nature through its various
Mountaineering and Adventure courses.
 Emphasis is laid on instilling the concept of
Adventure and following conventional
environmental guidelines to ensure

gushing on one side, NIM Campus has all that
can be called a scenic view. The flora and fauna
in the campus is well maintained, with several
species of birds and beautiful Himalayan garden
with plants that grow in high altitude.
 NIM campus has a well established training area
enabling a superior training experience to all its
trainees, it consist of - Outdoor Artificial Walls,

Courses

 Nehru Institute of Mountaineering basically


offers following six professional
mountaineering courses:
 Adventure Course
 Basic Mountaineering Course
 Advance Mountaineering Course (AMC)
 Search & Rescue (S&R)
 Methods Of Instructions (MOI)
 Special course.
Adventure Course
 The course basically deals with school students,
teachers and adults who are exposed to various
outward-bound activities like trekking, rock
climbing, bush craft, waterman ship.
Basic Mountaineering Course
 The Basic Mountaineering Course is the
foundation course in which men and women are
initiated into mountaineering.
Advance Mountaineering Course

 AMC aims at training the trainees for becoming


potential leaders and members of expeditions
into the Himalayas

One is eligible for an AMC only if he/she had got


an ‘A’ Grade in Basic Mountaineering Course
from any of the recognized mountaineering
institutes.
Search & Rescue

 Search & Rescue Course has been introduced as


regular course to be conducted once in a year
since December 1992
 Trainees graded 'A' only in the Advance
Mountaineering Course from NIM, HMI Darjeeling,
JIM Pehalgam are eligible for this course.
Method Of Instruction

 The aim of this course is to prepare


mountaineers for becoming potential
Instructors, for may it’s a career opportunity in
mountaineering and allied sports.
 Trainees graded 'A' only in the Advance
Mountaineering Course from the recognized
institutes are eligible for it
Special Courses

 These courses are run by the Institute for


different organizations on request. These
include courses for deaf and dumb, and
handicapped persons.
Admission Process
 The Admission Forms consist of two forms,
Appendix 'A' & Appendix 'B'. Appendix 'A' is the
Course Application Form and Appendix 'B' is the
Medical Form
 The forms can be downloaded from NIM website
and an additional Rs. 100.00 should be added
towards the same in the fee amount.
 Admission Forms & Prospects are available at
NIM office on working day between 10:00 to
13:00 & 14:00 to 17:00.
