Preparatory Activities

 Prayer
 Classroom Management
-Checking proper ventilation and lighting
- Cleaning the room
 Checking of attendance
 Pre-test
Before we start with our lesson today, let’s have a pre-test. Get ¼ sheet of paper and answer the
following questions that I will posted
1. What is an irony?
2. What are the 3 types of irony?
3. Differentiate the 3types of irony.

• Motivation (Picture Viewing)

Now that you are done with your pre-test, let’s move on to these pictures. Try to analyze these
pictures on the board. I want you to look for the similarities and the meaning of it.
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
What can you say about the pictures? Ma’am it shows the opposite of the thing.
Very good!
So, for today we will talk about the Irony.

 DISCUSSION
Irony is a figure of speech in which words are
used in such a way that their intended meaning is
different from the actual meaning of the words. It
may also be a situation that ends up in quite a
different way than what is generally anticipated.
In simple words, it is a difference between
appearance and reality.

On the grounds of the above definition, we

distinguish two basic types of irony: (1) verbal
irony, and (2) situational irony. Verbal irony
involves what one does not mean. For example,
when in response to a foolish idea, we say, “What
a great idea!” This is verbal irony. Situational
irony occurs when, for instance, a man is
chuckling at the misfortune of another, even
when the same misfortune is, unbeknownst to
him, befalling him.

Difference Between Dramatic Irony and

Situational Irony
Dramatic irony is frequently employed by writers
in their works. In situational irony, both the
characters and the audience are fully unaware of
the implications of the real situation. In dramatic
irony, the characters are oblivious of the
situation, but the audience is not. For example, in
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, we know well
before the characters that they are going to die. In
real life circumstances, irony may be comical,
bitter, or sometimes unbearably offensive.

Again, what are the 3 types of Irony?

Excellent! Verbal, situational and dramatic irony
What do we mean when we say irony?
The expression of one's meaning by using
language that normally signifies the opposite,
Nice answer! typically for humorous or emphatic effect.

Read the examples on the power point

presentation. Analyze the difference of the 3
types of irony.

VERBAL IRONY

The simplest kind of irony.

You use it everyday when you say one thing and

really mean another.

It is often similar to a sarcastic response.

Example:

When you appear to be sick and someone asks

you if you’re okay. You say “Of course!” But in
the meantime you are vomiting and fainting.

SITUATIONAL IRONY

Occurs when a situation turns out to be the

opposite of what you thought it would be.
Example:

The teacher’s daughter is a High School drop out.

The mayor’s wife gets caught stealing.

The chef won’t eat his/her own cooking.

The barber always needs a hair cut himself.

DRAMATIC IRONY

Occurs when the audience knows something that

the characters in the story, on the screen, or on
the stage do not know. It’s like the audience is
more aware of what’s going on than the people in
the production.

This is used to engage the audience and keep

them actively involved in the storyline.

Example:

In all of the Friday the 13th movies, we know

Jason is in the woods. The characters do not.
When they go out into the woods we are afraid
for them because we know that they are in
danger. We scream for them to run, we get
excited when they fall, we cringe when we know
that Jason is right behind the tree.

GROUP ACTIVITY

Let’s have a group activity, count 1-5 so that we

can have 5 groups. Now go to your respective
groups and choose your leader.

TASK:

GROUP1- Write one paragraph to define the

meaning of irony and the types of it. Make it sure
it must have ten sentences or more.

GROUP 2-You need to compose a short song that

explains the figurative language-Irony.

GROUP 3-You need to draw a chart to show the

definition and function of Irony.

GROUP 4-You need to act a short scene to show

the difference of the 3 types of Irony.

GROUP 5- You need to act like a newscaster and

report why we need to know and use Irony in our
daily living.
