Lab Report On The Working of Relay

A relay is an electromechanical switch that opens and closes circuits using an electromagnet. It has a frame, coil, armature, and contacts. When current is applied to the coil, it creates an electromagnetic field that moves the armature. The armature's movement opens and closes the contacts, allowing the relay to control one circuit using a signal from another circuit. Relays are commonly used to switch smaller control currents and amplify signals to control larger voltages and currents. They have applications in logic functions, time delays, controlling high voltage/current with low voltage/current, and protective devices.

LAB REPORT ON THE WORKING OF

RELAY
RELAY:
Model:

An electrical device, typically incorporating an electromagnet, that is

activated by a current or signal in one circuit to open or close another
circuit

Basic parts and functions of electromechanical relays

include:

1. Frame: Heavy-duty frame that contains and supports the

parts of the relay.
2. Coil: Wire is wound around a metal core. The coil of wire
causes an electromagnetic field.
3. Armature: A relays moving part. The armature opens and
closes the contacts. An attached spring returns the armature
to its original position.
4. Contacts: The conducting part of the switch that makes
(closes) or breaks (opens) a circuit.

Working of RELAY:

Relays are switches that open and close circuits

electromechanically or electronically. Relays control one
electrical circuit by opening and closing contacts in another
circuit. As relay diagrams show, when a relay contact is
normally open (NO), there is an open contact when the relay
is not energized. When a relay contact is normally Closed
(NC), there is a closed contact when the relay is not
energized. In either case, applying electrical current to the
contacts will change their state.
Relays are generally used to switch smaller currents in a
control circuit and do not usually control power consuming
devices except for small motors and Solenoids that draw low
amps. Nonetheless, relays can "control" larger voltages and
amperes by having an amplifying effect because a small
voltage applied to a relays coil can result in a large voltage
being switched by the contacts. .

THE BASIC DIAGRAM OF THE RELAY;

 Common (30) the common pin directly connected to the
normally connected pin.
 Normally open (87) indicates when the relay is NOT energized
(on); this pin is NOT connected to the common terminal (30) or an
open circuit.
 Normally closed (87a) indicates when the relay is NOT energized
(on), this pin IS connected to the common terminal or a closed
circuit.
 Pins 87a and 87 are not connected to one another—only to pin
30—which is why it is referred to as the common terminal
Relay Applications
Relays are used to realize logic functions. They play a very important
role in providing safety critical logic.

 Relays are used to provide time delay functions. They are used
to time the delay open and delay close of contacts.
 Relays are used to control high voltage circuits with the help of
low voltage signals. Similarly they are used to control high current
circuits with the help of low current signals.
 They are also used as protective relays. By this function all the
faults during transmission and reception can be detected and isolated
