Community Behavior Change Assistant, Moroto district, South Karamoja, Apolou Project

 Mobilized communities in six parishes of Nadunget Sub County to form Mother Care Groups
and Male Change Agents using a standardized approach of Mother Care group and Male
Change Agents

• Introduced the Behavior Change Communication interventions to relevant stakeholders


including local government representatives, technical staff and community members, and foster
ongoing positive cooperation with these stakeholders that is Sub County Chiefs, CDOs, Health
Assistants, Parish Chiefs, LCs, Councilors and Community leaders

• Organized and lead 10 trainings for Village Health Team/Health Promoters and Male Change
Agents in Nadunget Sub County Moroto District

• Supervised 10 ongoing implementation of care group maternal and child health and nutrition
promotion activities and ensured quality control

• Identified and documented 2 best practices to share with the team, stakeholders, Apolou
partners and donors

• Provided technical contribution in the development of core IEC materials on MCHN, SRH,
Gender and GVB for Male Change Agents and their Spouses
• Coordinated with other health teams to ensure complementary approaches, monitored
implemented Apolou project activities and documented best practices and success stories

• Supported 2 CBCA colleagues to ensure team success, including but not limited to logistics

Supported Adolescent Coordinator of Moroto district in Nadunget sub-county during


identification and selection of adolescent trainers and mentors and rollout community dialogue
session in Nadunget sub-county and identified barriers in relation to the supporting safe spaces
and came up with solutions to the above barriers by drawing up action plan, resources and
responsible persons for follow-ups

implemented Carter project funded by Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, it was 4 month
project which started in July and ended in October 2017 and used the same Mother Care-group
approach and Curriculum and Counseling Cards during monthly meetings with Lead mothers to
disseminate 4 key lessons to pregnant women and caregivers with children under five years to
understand what trachoma is, how it is transmitted, who is affected and how it can be prevented
through good sanitation. Personal hygiene and by maintaining a clean environment.

Concern Worldwide, Karamoja (2 districts) November 2012 – June 2017


District Field Coordinator – RWANU Project Concern Worldwide Uganda implemented the
USAID-funded PL 480 Title II Development Food Aid programme called “Resiliency through
Wealth, Agriculture and Nutrition (RWANU)” in Karamoja. RWANU is a five year $ 50 million
project implemented in consortium with ACDI/VOCA and WHH.The project has two strategic
objectives to reduce food insecurity among vulnerable rural populations in four districts of
Karamoja: (1) Improved availability and access to food and (2) reduced malnutrition in pregnant
and lactating mothers and children under five. Concern is responsible for strategic objective 2.
Responsibilities

 Lead a team of 22 Health Promoters and 6 Health Educators during establishment of


Household Caregiver Groups and Mother Care Groups through sensitizing community
leaders, Sub County and District officials on the formation of Household members and
Mother Caregiver Croups, through community mapping exercises, including community
census to identify households with pregnant and lactating women and children under
five years as required by RWANU Project
 Worked with the district CDOs, DHI, Health Assistants, Parish Chiefs, LCs and community
leaders and identified the Community structures; Lead mothers, Male Change Agents,
Trained, mentored them and held outreaches sessions on MCHN, Gender, GBV and
adolescent sexual reproductive health and peer education.
 Prepared and updated detailed work plans and budget and shared with Health and
Nutrition Manager.
 Held regular debriefing feedback sessions with CDOs, Parish Chiefs, Health Assistants,
Health Promoters and Educators and identified challenges early and found appropriate
local solutions to the problems, worked and strengthened the working relation among
the teams and with staff.
 Worked with the district Community Development Officers, Health Assistants, Parish
Chiefs, Local Councils and influential community leaders to identify Male Change Agents
at parish level and facilitated sessions, while incorporating SRH, MCHN, Family planning,
GVB, Gender, HIV/AIDs messaging while documenting progress in activities and lessons
learnt.
 Provided support supervision, mentorship and guidance to health promoters and Health
educators through Mother Care group and MCA approaches to passage health and
Nutrition messages to Leads Mothers and Male Change Agents during group session
meetings twice a moth using module methodology.
 During RWANU Project, supported in the creation and consolidation of strong synergies
with the local community stakeholders like LCs, women groups, the religious leaders and
government counter parts like CDOs, Sub County Administrative Officers, Parish Chiefs,
health Assistants, DHT members to support Social Behavior Communication Strategy
activities from District, sub county, Parish to Village level.
 Contributed in the development, pre-testing and distribution of MCHN modules,
Counseling cards and other IEC materials on behavioral change and awareness aspects.
 Planned and mobilized communities to participate in community mass awareness
events like women’s day celebrations, Girl Child day, this was in collaboration with
Community Development Department and key lessons with Lead mother and Male
Change Agents were show cased an example like exclusive breastfeeding drama and
Importance of Joint decision making was show cased during the events in both
Nakapiripirit and Amudat districts
 Ensured timely and accurate procurements and finances for Mother Care group and
Male Change Agents in Nakapiripirit and Amudat by ensuring all Purchase Requests and
payment requests were raised at least one week before delivery date in accordance
with program budget provisions to avoid disruption of activities.
 Developed and submitted accurate weekly movement plans to transport officer every
Thursday for the following week to allow transport officer to timely compile for smooth
activity implementation.

 Coordinated with the Nutritionist and SBCC Specialist in the selection of Lead Mothers
and the creation of Mother Care groups structures in 9 sub counties of Nakapiripirit, 3 sub
counties of Amudat and 6 sub counties of Moroto districts respectively
 Oversaw the linkages of Mother Care groups (MCG) activities with VHT Peer supervisors,
VHT members and other community members (Local Councilors and Opinion Leaders,
Kraal leaders)
 Security Focal point person for Nakapiripirit and Amudat district through updating staffs
and Moroto regional office on security matters
 Responsible for Cluster Coordination of RWANU field based staffs of Namalu, Loregae,
Lolachat, Kakomongole and Nabilatuk sub counties were 35 staffs were able to share
information regarding RWANU project challenges, Achievements and wayforward with
project beneficiaries and sub county officials.

Community Mobilization Officer – IMAM Project Concern Worldwide Uganda through UNICEF
Project of keep women and children alive aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality in children
under five years suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in Abim, Kotido, Nakapiripirit
and Amudat districts through provision of technical support services to the government health
service system in order to implement Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM)
protocol)

Responsibilities
 Supported Nakapiripirit district in the selection of 456 Village Health Team members
(VHTs)
 456 VHTs trained by the end of the 1st year of IMAM Project
 1 Focal Group Discussion on IYCF, WASH, Nutrition and HIV conducted by each VHT per
month in their working villages in Nakapiripirit and Amudat.
 19,764 beneficiaries in Nakapiripirit and 4,273 in Amudat reached by the VHTs at
respective village level for health education on IYCF, WASH, Nutrition and HIV between
January and October 2011
 280 Traditional Birth Attendances (TBAs) and Community Leaders orientated by the end
of the 3rd quarter (by end July 2011)
 Conducted one SQUEAC (Semi-Quantitative Evaluation of Access and Coverage)
nutritional surveys in Nakapiripirit and Amudat districts

Concern Worldwide, Karamoja (1 district) 13th May 2009– Oct 2010


Community Mobilization Officer – CMAM Project Concern Worldwide Uganda through UNICEF
Project of keep women and children alive aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality in children
under five years suffering from both from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute
Malnutrition in Nakapiripirit through provision of technical support services to the government
health service system in order to implement Community Management of Acute Malnutrition
(CMAM) protocol.
Responsibilities
 Successfully identified 67 potential Village Health Team members in target working areas
for Community management of acute malnutrition activities and Out-patient Therapeutic
Care coordination.
 Build up the capacity of 67 Village Health Team members on Community Management of
Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) and Out –patient therapeutic Care (OTC) for active case
finding, referral and follow up of malnourish children
 Actively got involved in 2 integrated mass screening exercise on malnutrition and
micronutrient deficiency events with Nakapiripirit and Amudat Districts Local
Governments mass health programs
 Supported 67 potential Village Health Team members (VHTs) on health education
sessions on Community Management of Acute malnutrition (CMAM) hence reaching to
about 19,000 caregivers in group areas
 Provided on-job training to 67 Village Health Team members (VHTs) on early detection of
malnourish case, screening, referral, follow up of absentees and defaulters and health
education messages of plump-nut usage, ORS and other antibiotics to beneficiaries during
clinic days and home to home visits.

Nakapiripirit district Emergency Nutrition Project October 2008 to March 2009

Responsibilities
 Passed information, education and communication (IEC) messages to 28,000 caregivers
during OTC days through 67 identified community mobilizers in targeted 11 sub counties
of Nakapiripirit district
 Followed up 120 absentees from defaulting during OTC days and household visits by 67
community mobilizers.
 Monitored food security situation in 4 market days on weekly basis through 4 community
mobilizers in Namalu, Lolachat, Nabilatuk and Amudat sub counties and entered data to
inform decision on food household intake and nutrition status of beneficiary households
in project areas.
 Supervised and monitored 67 community mobilizers on early case detection, MUAC
screening, referral and follow up of defaulters during project cycle.
