PHOTOSYNTHESIS - SBA - Effect of Light On Rate of Photosynthesis

This document provides instructions for an experiment to determine the effect of light on the rate of photosynthesis. Students will measure the number of bubbles produced by elodea plants under different distances from a light source to observe the relationship between light intensity and photosynthesis. The results will be analyzed to understand how light is a limiting factor for photosynthesis and its relationship to the temperature changes measured during the experiment.

TITLE: Photosynthesis

AIM: To determine the effect of light on the rate of photosynthesis

APPARATUS & MATERIALS: boiling tube, beaker, lamp, meter rule, stop watch, scissors, thermometer,
spatula, sodium bicarbonate, water and elodea

METHOD:
1. Dissolve 2 spatulas of sodium bicarbonate in a beaker
of water and stir to completely dissolve.
2. Carefully cut a 10 cm length of elodea under water.
3. Place elodea in the beaker and cover carefully with
funnel.
4. Fill the boiling tube with solution and carefully place
over the funnel as shown in the diagram.
5. Place the lamp at the following distances: 10 cm, 20 cm,
30 cm, 40 cm and 50 cm for 5 minutes at a time and
count the number of bubbles evolved.
6. Measure and record the temperature at each distance.

OBSERVATIONS/RESULTS:
1. What are the data items you will be recording? _____________________________________________

2. What is the best way to record/present the data? ___________________________________________

DISCUSSION: Use these questions as a guide for the content to include in your discussion. Do not write in your
lab books in point form.
1. Background Information:
a. Define photosynthesis.
b. Write the equation for photosynthesis.
c. Define limiting factor.
2. Explanation of results:
a. What are the trends observed in your results? (Quote values in your response)
b. State the reason for the trend(s) observed.
c. State the significance of recording temperature during the experiment.
d. State why there was/was not a change in temperature.

LIMITATIONS/SOURCES OF ERROR: State one of each

CONCLUSION: Write a simple statement that links your aim and your results.
