The men’s town. actions were just one example of ‘skipping’ – looking for food in skips or bins – which is related to ‘freeganism’. Freeganism is an environmental movement that began several years ago as a response to the amount of waste being produced. Freegans spend the absolute minimum on new products, but instead try to live by finding and reusing food, furniture and other things that have been discarded by individuals and businesses.
C Rather than taking food from bins, perhaps the real
crime is the amount of it that is wasted by supermarkets. Thousands of tonnes of perishable food, like fruit and vegetables, and products that have passed their sell-by dates are thrown away, even though many are still edible. Some supermarkets are beginning to donate their unsold produce to food banks, which feed people living in poverty, but sadly the number of people needing food banks is increasing and cooperation from supermarkets is still in its early stages. However, supermarkets in Britain have agreed to provide information on the amount of food they discard, so if this encourages them to reduce these figures they might do more to support the poorer members of their communities.
