PERFORMING MENSURATION AND CALCULATION

Mensuration is all about the process of the measurement. It is based on the use of
algebraic equations and geometric calculations to provide measurement data
regarding the width, depth, and volume of a given object or group of objects.
Measurements are obtained by computing to arrive at definite answer. Mensuration is
often based on making use of a model or base object that serves as the standard for
making the calculations. Calculation is an assessment of the risks, possibilities, more
effects of a situation or course of action.
Film animation technology has come a long way since the early days of hand-
drawn cartoons. Over the years, the techniques used by animator to bring character to
life have improved dramatically. Traditional animation created the illusion of movement
through frame-by-frame manipulation of drawings and illustration. Three dimensional
images widely used today by most animators. With the help of technology and animation
software, the creation of moving pictures or images were made possible in today’s
animation. The animation industry is already very dependent on computers to achieve a
photorealistic texture, Color s, expression, and movement of characters backgrounds.
The advent of computers has helped animation studios create computer-generated
images and handle large amounts of data to be carried out on powerful desktop
computers.

TYPES OF COMPONENTS TO BE MEASURED

A computer is a powerful tool because it stores huge amount of data and

information. Computers come different styles, sizes, and types. In creating an animation
film, it requires a large computer memory to cope with the images during the line testing,
digital coloring, and shooting the final film. Characters and backgrounds are already
painted by computer components and objects because each part plays an important
role whenever an animator uses the computer.

TYPES OF COMPONENTS AND OBJECTS TO BE MEASURED

1. Memory
a. Read-only memory (ROM) is a type of data storage
where data is permanently stored on computer and other
electronic devices. It performs major input/output tasks and holds
programs or software instruction that are essential for boot-up and
needed to start a computer.

b. Random access memory (RAM) is the most common type

of memory where data, programs, and operating system are
stored so that they can be accessed quickly in any random order.

2. Data Storage
a. Hard drive is a data storage device used for storing and
retrieving digital information from nonvolatile memory in a
random-access manner.

b. Optical drive is a storage device that uses light to read

and write information such as CD, DVD, and Blu-ray drives

c. External drive is an external removable hard disk

typically connected via USB.

3. Processor
Central processing unit (CPU) is the hardware device in a
computer system that processes the instructions of a computer
program.

4. Video Card
Video card is also known as graphics card. It is a device in
a computer that outputs visual information to the monitor.

bit – short for binary digit; the smallest unit of information in coming computing
and digital communications.
boot-up – to load an operating system into the computer’s main memory or
random-access memory.
compact disc (CD) – a digital optical disc data storage format.
data – information processed or stored by a computer.
digital versatile disc (DVD) – a type of compact disc able to store large amounts
of data, especially high-resolution audiovisual material.

saved even if the power is turned off.

UNDERSTANDING A SPECIFICATION
Specification or spec is a list of key components that make up the
computer.
Specifications of the computer are usually provided by retailers to help
costumers decide which combination of features you need for animation.
PROCESSOR INFORMATION
Processor are defined by their speed either in megahertz (MHz)or in
gigahertz (GHz). It means the number of operations they can perform per second.

The higher the value, the faster the PC can perform. Now a days, processors are
designed by two companies: Intel and Advance Micro Devices (AMD).
The table below shows the different levels of processor ideal for a specific
activity.

MEMORY INFORMATION
RAM is the main working memory in a computer that stores and retrieves
information. The processor uses this memory to run programs. RAM is measured
in megabytes (MB) Most modern computers use DDR 2 RAM.

The hard drive is the computer’s primary storage area that stores the
application and programs that run on the PC. Hard drive is measured in gigabytes
(GB)

Types of Graphics Cards

1. Integrated graphics cards are on-board graphics cards that come up with
standard motherboard.
2. Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) graphics cards are those that use the
PCI slots on the motherboard connected to the computer.
3. AGP graphics card are similar to PCI graphics cards but have 4 speeds, the
faster being 8x.

byte – a unit of data that is equal to eight bits.

computer applications – a computer program used for a particular type of job or
problem.
data storage – a general term for archiving data in electromagnetic or other forms for
use by a computer or device.
digital – recording or storing information as series of the number 1 and 0 to show that a
signal is present or absent.
media – communication channels through which news, entertainment, education,
data, or promotional messages are disseminated.

CALCULATING DATA STORAGE CAPACITY

A byte is one character of information and is equal to eight digital 1’s or 0’s. It is
the smallest unit of measurement used to represent storage capacity. Data storage
capacity is measured in terms of bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes.

A thousand bytes is known as a kilobyte (KB)

1, 000 = 1KB

A million bytes is known as a megabytes (MB)

1, 000, 000B = 1MB

A billion bytes is called a gigabyte (GB)

1, 000, 000, 000B = 1GB

A trillion bytes is called a terabyte (TB)

1, 000, 000, 000, 0000B = 1TB

Other components and devices that use byte storage are RAM, hard disk space,
CDs, DVDs and MP3 players. The table below is a list of standard units of measurement
used for data storage.

1. Convert 100KB to B
Since there are 1, 000B in 1KB, simply multiply the given quantity 100KB by
1, 000B.
Solution: 100KB = 100 (1, 000B) = 100, 000B
Answer: Therefore, there 10, 000B for every 100KB
2. Convert 5MB to GB
From the reference table, there are 1, 000, 000B for every MB.
5MB = 5, 000, 000B
For every gigabyte, there are 1, 000, 000, 000B
5,000, 000B = 0.005GGB
3. Convert 0.5GB to KB
There are 1, 000, 000, 000B for every GB
0.5GB = 500, 000, 000B
So, 500, 000, 000B = 500, 000KB
Therefore, there are 500, 000KB for every 0.5GB

Employing Different Technique in checking the accuracy of Computation

Computer systems use many different units of measurements. The units of data
measurement were introduced to manage and operate digital information. Computer
store information in the form of 1 and 0 in different types of storages such as memory,
hard disk and USB drives.
As discussed in the previous lesson, most animations studios rely on workstation
with vast amounts of processing power to render large digital information during the
production process.

476KBx1, 024 = 487, 424B
1MB = 1, 048, 576B
750MB x 1, 048, 576 = 786, 432, 000B of space
786, 432, 000/487, 424 = 1, 613.45

1KB = 1, 024B
10 x 1, 024 = 20, 480B in a 20KB file
1MB = 1, 048, 576B
1, 048, 576/20, 480 = 51.2
There are 51.2 files stored in a 1MB folder.
