Radical
innovation
Incremental innovation
– Incremental Innovation is the most
common form of innovation. It utilizes your
existing technology and increases value to
the customer (features, design changes, etc.)
within your existing market. Almost all
companies engage in incremental
innovation in one form or another.
Radical innovation
– Radical innovation is what we think of mostly
when considering innovation. It gives birth
to new industries (or swallows existing ones)
and involves creating revolutionary
technology. The airplane, for example, was
not the first mode of transportation, but it is
revolutionary as it allowed commercialised
air travel to develop and prosper.
Architectural innovation
– Architectural innovation is simply taking the
lessons, skills and overall technology and
applying them within a different market.
Technology transfer
This innovation is amazing at increasing new
customers as long as the new market is
receptive. Most of the time, the risk involved
in architectural innovation is low due to the
reliance and reintroduction of proven
technology. Though most of the time it
requires tweaking to match the requirements
of the new market.
Modular innovation
– Modular innovation means that just a single
part of the bicycle has changed, but not the
way it interacts with the rest of the bike. For
example, one could change the seat, or. the
light, or the handlebar and change nothing
else about the bike. A somewhat more
complex example is that of a photo camera.

Technological innovation
– Technological innovation is the
successful implementation (in
commerce or management) of a
technical idea new to the institution
creating it. It is based on specific
technology, invention, discovery
Examples of Innovative Technology Designs

Wireless Charging Technology

From Ecoupled:
At CES eCoupled presented a
magnetic induction system to
charge everything from laptops to
electric vehicles without physical
contact. The technology currently
has 98 percent efficiency.
Examples of Innovative Technology Designs

U-Socket AC and USB Power Outlet:

Finally a geeks dream come true, the U-
Socket AC has two built-in USB power
ports. The USB stays off until its
connected.
Product innovation
– A good or service that is new or
significantly improved. This includes
significant improvements in technical
specifications, components and
materials, software in the product, user
friendliness or other functional
characteristics.
Process innovation
– A process innovation is the
implementation of a new or significantly
improved production or delivery method.
This includes significant changes in
techniques, equipment and/or software.

While product innovation is often visible to your customers, a change in process

is typically only seen and valued internally.

In general, changes in process reduce costs of production more often than they
drive an increase in revenue. Process innovation is usually a low-risk.
Marketing innovation (or innovation marketing)
– Innovation marketing which is simply the
implementation of a new marketing method which
has not been used earlier and normally involves a
big change in the product design, pricing, promotion
and even packaging.

Other ways of innovation marketing may be such as launching the product in

unconventional places, pricing the product uniquely or promoting the product in a
unique way.

The main purpose of innovation marketing is to open up new markets and

ultimately lead to an increase in the business’ sales.
Organisational innovation
– An organisational innovation is the implementation
of a new organisational method in the firm’s business
practices, workplace organisation or external
relations.

Innovations in workplace organisation involve the implementation of new methods for

distributing responsibilities and decision making among employees for the division of work
within and between firm activities (and organisational units), as well as new concepts for the
structuring of activities, such as the integration of different business activities. An example of an
organisational innovation in workplace organisation is the first implementation of an
organisational model that gives the firm’s employees greater autonomy in decision making and
encourages them to contribute their ideas.
Social innovation
– Social innovation is the process of developing
and deploying effective solutions to
challenging and often systemic social and
environmental issues in support of social
progress.

– “Social innovation is not the prerogative or privilege of any organizational form

or legal structure. Solutions often require the active collaboration of constituents
across government, business, and the non-profit world”
