Assignment - 3 & 4

1) The document provides instructions for Assignment 3 & 4, which involves determining the minimum wall thickness of a monopile structure and assessing the safety of a submarine hull design. 2) Students are instructed to show their working, cite figures, avoid plagiarism, and submit their answers by October 23rd. 3) The assignment involves using provided figures and empirical formulas to calculate wall thicknesses and assess safety based on given load conditions and material properties.

OE 6200 - DESIGN OF OFFSHORE STRUCTURES

ASSIGNMENT NO. 3 & 4 (10 Marks) Date: 19.10.2020

a) All questions carry equal marks

b) Do not copy from others. If any two answer scripts are common word by word, no marks will be given to
both answer scripts. Try to keep your answers confidential.
c) Answers shall be explained by neat sketches wherever necessary
d) Write ROLL NUMBER and Name on each page of the answer scripts.
e) Write legibly so that the answers can be read and evaluated.
f) The answers to the problems shall be derived and not just final answer. If intermediate steps are missing,
marks will not be given.
g) Scan the answer scripts and send by email on or before 23rd October 2020 to my email

1. Determine the minimum wall thickness required to resist the deck load, wind, wave and current
forces as shown in figure 1. Assume yield strength of 345 MPa. Depth of fixity can be assumed
as 5 times diameter of the monopod below the seabed.

2. Determine the safety of the submarine hull with dual skin arrangement of inner diameter 5m
with an outer shell thickness of 50mm and an inner shell thickness of 50mm operating at a
depth of 150m below mean sea level. Yield strength of material is to be taken as 345 MPa. The
height, thickness and spacing of stiffening rings is 500mm, 25mm and 1m respectively. Typical
sections of the hull is shown in figure 2 The longitudinal bending of the hull shall be estimated
using the empirical formula M=0.05L2w in which w is the weight of hull /m and L is the length
of the hull = 200m.
