1.05 Graphing Polynomial Functions Using Roots (Filled In) PDF

The document discusses graphing polynomial functions using intercepts. It defines absolute and local maximum and minimum values. For each polynomial function given, it asks to identify the sign of the leading coefficient, degree, end behavior, zeros and their orders, y-intercept, and local and/or absolute maximums/minimums. General rules are provided for the number of x-intercepts and local extrema based on whether the polynomial has an odd or even degree.

1.5 GRAPHING POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS USING INTERCEPTS

Absolute Maximum and Minimum Values:

1. A function f has an absolute maximum at a if f ( a ) ³ f ( x )
for all values of x.

2. A function f has an absolute minimum at a if f ( a ) £ f ( x )
for all values of x.
( a, f ( a )
*Note: a represents a specific x-value, as opposed to x,
which represents all x-values.

Local Maximum and Minimum Values:

ii) zeros (clearly label on your graph) and order for each
iii) y-intercept (clearly label on your graph)

For odd degree polynomials:

- Absolute maximum/minimum: none

- Local maximum/minimum: n - 1 (at most) where n represents the degree; can have as little as 0
- x-intercepts: n (at most) ; 1 (at least)

For even degree polynomials:

- Absolute maximum if leading coefficient is negative. Absolute minimum if leading coefficient is positive.
- Local maximum/minimum: n - 1 (at most) where n represents the degree; can have as little as 1.
- x-intercepts: n (at most) ; 0 (at least; i.e. with vertical translation)
