DIFFERENT CONTEMPORARY ART TECHNIQUE: Performing Arts

OBJECTIVES:
A. Describe Performance Arts in the Philippines;
B. Identify Contemporary artists in Performing Arts;
C. Appreciate the beauty of Philippine Performing Arts; and
D. Conceptualize a play and Create a promotion poster of it.

I. INTRODUCTION TO PERFORMING ARTS

WHAT IS PERFORMING ARTS?
 Performing arts refers to forms of art in which artists use their voices, bodies or inanimate
objects to convey artistic expression. It is different from visual arts, which is when artists
use paint, canvas or various materials to create physical or static art objects.
 Artists engaged in Performance arts conceptualize their act in relation to the minimal
props needed to get concepts, an idea, or an advocacy across.
 The performers’ act can take place anywhere at any length of time.
 Purpose is not to entertain but to convey a message in a dramatic sense.

II. PERFORMING ARTS : DANCE

WHAT IS DANCE?

 Dance is a performing art form consisting of purposefully

selected sequences of human movement. This
movement has aesthetic and symbolic value, and is
acknowledged as dance by performers and observers
within a particular culture
 Dance is a rhythmic and expressive movement of the
body in successive movement usually accompanied by
music. It has been said to be the mother of the arts, for
it’s the oldest of the art which actually reflects man’s
age old need to communicate different emotions such
as joy, grief, excitement and others.

Two kinds of movement

1.Movement within the body which includes the hand

and arms.

2. Movement from one space to another.

1. MUSIC – It is closely related to dance for it plays a significant role in it. It is used as
accompaniment that somehow motivates the dancer’s movement.

2. MOVEMENT – It refers to action of dances with the use of their bodies to create organized
patterns.

3. THEME – It pertains to the content or main ingredient of the dance. It actually conveys
the message of the dance.

4. TECHNIQUES - It refers to the skill in executing movement. As a dancer, one needs to

have a complete control over the muscles of his body for him to be said technically
proficient

5. DESIGN – It refers to the arrangement of movements according to pattern in time (either

fast or slow) and space (one’s position in relation to his background).

6. PROPERTIES AND COSTUME – These contribute to the visual effect of dance. The
costumes can somehow relate closely to the beliefs and environment of people.

1. ETHNOLOGIC DANCE – This is a dance

that is indigenous to a certain race or
country. The term ethnic is used to
distinguish religious dances, and designed
as hymns of praise to a god, or to bring on
good fortune in peace and war. They are
symbolic in meaning that can’t be
understood easily by persons who don’t
belong to the ethnic group.

2. SOCIAL DANCE – These are popular

type of dancing for pleasure as generally
performed by pairs or group of people
following a definite step or pattern. Most of
these have specific rhythms and
coordinated with the movement and steps
of the body, hand, foot and head.

a. BALLROOM DANCE – It actually originated

as square dance which was followed by
waltz, tango, foxtrot, swing, etc.

b. FOLK DANCE – It usually derived from

ethnic dances. People all over the world
have their own folk dances as distinct to
their specific culture.

3. SPECTACULAR OR THEATRICAL DANCE –

These are dances which are intended for
viewing audience. Usually, these are
performed for the entertainment of
spectators.

a. BALLET – It’s the ultimate expression of art

in dance which originated in the royal courts
during the middle ages. The movement of
the dance is subject to definite discipline of
the body, hands, legs and others. Usually a
ballet includes staging, scenery, costumes
dancing and music; but no singing and
dialogue.

b. MODERN DANCE – It is often characterized

as something natural and free. It is also been
called as expressional dance. This dance
emerged as a form of a revolt against the
strictness governing the old forms of dance.
It has varied styles of movements based on
the new trend; therefore, it doesn’t stick to
conventions. The major emphasis of this
dance is on the expression through the
dancer’s execution.

1. CONTEMPORARY BALLET- Contemporary ballet draws from both modern dance and classical
ballet for its training methods and technique. For a dancer to be able to embody various styles
the training regimen has become more diverse.

II. PERFORMING ARTS : Theatre Arts

DRAMA AND THEATRE

 Drama refers to a literary genre that provides written text in the form of a script.
Greek term “dran” meaning action.
 Theater is the actual realization of the script in the form of actors performing on a
stage.

WHAT IS THEATRE ARTS?

 Theatre or theater is a collaborative form of performing art that uses live performers,
typically actors or actresses, to present the experience of a real or imagined event
before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage. The performers may
communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture,
speech, song, music, and dance.

1. Tragedy- the character (usually a good and noble person of high rank) is brought to a
disastrous end

2. Melodrama- A melodrama is a dramatic work wherein the plot, which is typically

sensational and designed to appeal strongly to the emotions, takes precedence over
detailed characterization. Melodramas typically concentrate on dialogue, which is
often bombastic or excessively sentimental, rather than action

3. Comedy- Comedy is a dramatic work that makes people laugh. Some comedies aim
only to create laughter whereas some aim to expose and criticize the vices and follies
of the society while creating laughter

4. Farce- Farce is a type of comedy that is characterized by highly exaggerated and

comic situations and crude and one-dimensional characterizations. It has no other aim
than creating laughter

5. Fantasy- Fantasy is a genre of fiction that commonly uses magic and other supernatural
phenomena as a primary element of plot, theme, or setting. Many works within the
genre take place in imaginary worlds where magic is common.

6. Musical- Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs,

spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical –
humour, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through words, music, movement
and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole

MODULE 10- Performing Arts Subject Teacher: Mr. Jess Martin C. Siapno

1. Epic poetry- Epic poetry is considered the

highest point of Filipino folk literature, and dates
back to the pre-colonial period. These epics,
usually of romance or adventure, are
commonly presented during festivals and
gatherings such as weddings, baptisms, and
wakes. Singers have been known to perform for
hours at a time. One of the most famous epic
poems is Biag ni Lam-ang, the national epic of
the Ilocano people, and notable for being the
first folk epic to be recorded in written form after
being passed on from generation to
generation. Biag ni Lam-ang starring JC Santos

2. Duplo- The duplo is a poetic debate

presented through song and dance, which
originated from indigenous courtship customs.
Poets used proverbs and riddles to present their
suit to the woman of their choice. This ultimately
evolved into a more formal debate on issues,
and started to be called the Balagtasan.
Duplo is a poetical debate held by trained men and
women in the ninth night, the last night of the
mourning period for the dead

3. Moro-Moro- For a time, one of the most popular

types of theater in the Philippines was the Moros y
Cristianos, which is not surprising for a country that
was under Spanish rule for 300 years. Commonly
called moro-moro, it is a street drama that usually
lasted for several days, and presented both secular
themes like love and vengeance, and the Spanish-
influenced religious theme of the conflict between
Christians and Moors. The moro-moro only survives
in isolated towns today, and though an integral
part of Filipino art history, it may not bear too much
close scrutiny these days with its less than admirable
depictions of intolerance.

4. Senakulo- Another performing art stemming

from religious custom is the Senakulo or Passion
Play. This is the dramatization of the life and
death of Jesus Christ and is usually presented
as a community activity during the Lenten
season. This still endures to the present, ranging
from simple productions to more technically
sophisticated and modernized versions.

5. Traditional Folk Dance

With its varied cultures and communities
throughout its 7000 islands, the Philippines has
a diverse collection of folk dances. Some of
the most popular folk dances are the Singkil, a
folk dance that originated from the Maranao
people of Lake Lanao in Mindanao, from the
epic legend Darangen; the Itik-Itik, which
originated as an improvised dance in Surigao
del Sur and was discovered by National Artist
for Dance Francisca Reyes-Aquino; and
the Tinikling, which is similar to Singkil with its
use of bamboo poles that dancers must
weave through. It is supposed to mimic the
movement of the local tikling birds.

6. Sarswela- The sarsuwela is a type of

melodrama, usually in three acts, that uses
alternately spoken and sung words. It was the
Spanish influence that started the sarsuwela,
but it was also this colonization that led Filipinos
to incorporate nationalistic overtones in the
art. This resulted in the arrest of several
prominent writers such as Aurelio Tolentino and
Pascual Poblete. As proof of its importance in
Philippine culture, in 2011 the National
Commission for Culture and the Arts
designated the sarsuwela as a nominee for
the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage lists.
