CityOfGodHowBroad Richmond

City of God, how Broad and Far is a 3 stanza hymn that summarizes the city of God in 3 sentences or less: 1) The city of God spreads its walls widely to include the true freedmen of every age and place. 2) It is one holy church, one strong army with a single purpose and intent, working as one band and singing one harvest song for its omnipotent King. 3) The speech of the city of God has been purely maintained from humanity's earliest days, and its empire of freedom, love, and truth has grown grandly.

City of God, how broad and far How gleam thy watch fires through the night
Outspread thy walls sublime! With never fainting ray!
The true thy chartered freemen are How rise thy towers, serene and bright,
Of every age and clime. To meet the dawning day!

One holy Church, one army strong; In vain the surge’s angry shock,
One steadfast, high intent; In vain the drifting sands;
One working band, one harvest song, Unharmed upon the eternal Rock
One King omnipotent. The eternal City stands.

How purely hath thy speech come down

From man’s primeval youth! Samuel Johnson
How grandly hath thine empire grown
Of freedom, love and truth!
