EXERCISE

Question 1

The following are the scores obtain by 11 students in a test.

8 12 14 15 14 1

19 26 17 33 17

a) Find first quartile, median and third quartile.

ANSWER: First quartile = n+1

= 11 + 1

=3

Median = 1, 8, 12, 14, 14, 15, 17, 17, 19, 26, 33

= 15

Third quartile = 3 (n + 1)

= 3 (11 + 1)

= 3 (12)

= 36

=9

b) Find range and interquartile range.

Range = largest value – smallest value

= 33 – 1

= 32

Interquartile range = Q3 – Q1

=9–3

=3
Question 2

The speeds to the nearest miles per hour, of 120 vehicles passing a check point were recorded
and are grouped in the table below:

Speed (mph) 21 - 25 26 - 30 31 - 35 36 - 40 41 - 45

Number of vehicles 22 48 25 16 9

Class CB f x fx

21 - 25 20.5 – 25.5 22 23 506

26 – 30 25.5 – 30.5 48 28 1344

31 – 35 30.5 – 35.5 25 33 825

36 – 40 35.5 – 40.5 16 38 608

41 - 45 40.5 – 45.5 9 43 387

TOTAL 120 165 3670

ANSWER:

a) Estimate the mean and variance of this distribution.

× = ∑ f×

= 3670

120

= 30.58

Variance = s2 = ∑ײ - (∑×) ²

= 165² - (165) ²

120

= 27225 – 226.88

120

= 224.98

b) What is the modal class and class median?

Modal class = 26.30

Median class = 31 – 35

c) Find the range.

Range = 45.5 - 20.5

= 25

Question 3

The mean for the number of pages of a sample of women’s fitness magazines is 132, with a
variance of 23; the mean for the number of advertisements of a sample of women’s fitness
magazines is 182, with a variance of 62. Compare the variations of these two samples.

ANSWER:

Question 4

Consider the following two sample data sets:

Set 1 Set 2

12 14 13 20 22 21

13 12 17 21 21 20

15 14 15 20 20 22

a) Compute the mean of each data sets

ANSWER:

12 – 14 11.5 – 14.5 6 13 78

15 – 17 14.5 – 17.5 3 16 48

TOTAL 9 29 126

20 – 21 19.5 – 21.5 7 20.5 143.5

22 - 23 21.5 – 23.5 2 22.5 45

total 9 43 188.5

× = ∑ f×

= 188.5

= 20.94

b) Calculate the standard deviation of each data sets

SET 1

S2 = ∑ײ - (∑×) ²

= 29² - (29) ²

= 841 – (841)

= 841 – 93.44

= 83.06

= 9.11

SET 2
S2 = ∑ײ - (∑×) ²

= 43² - (43) ²

= 1849 – (1849)

= 1849 – 205.44

= 182.62

= 13.51

c) Find the coefficient of variation of each data sets and determine which data is more dispersed.

Question 5

a) Find the range, mode and median.

ANSWER:

Range = 9 – 0

=9

Mode = 7

Median = 0, 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7, 7,9, 9
=6

b) Find the interquartile range.

Q1 = n + 1

= 17 + 1

= 4.5

Q2 = 3(n + 1)

= 3(17 +1)

= 13,5

IQR = Q3 – Q1

= 13.5 – 4.5

=9
