Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) ESSAY
Water Health and sanitation is a field which has garnered a lot of funding in research for
betterment of human existence especially in the sub-Saharan Africa. The benefits of having
access to an improved Sanitation and drinking water can only be fully realized when there is also
access to improved sanitation and adherence to good hygiene practices. Beyond the immediate,
obvious advantages of Humans being hydrated and healthier, access to water, sanitation and
hygiene has profound wider socio-economic impacts, particularly for women and girls.
As a dedicated target within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6), WASH is testament to
its fundamental role in public health and therefore in the future of sustainable development. IN
2010 the United Nations General Assembly recognised safe water and sanitation as a human
right. For universal fulfilment of these rights to become reality, it’s a universal responsibility of
everyone for a need of the right systems: well-resourced, capable institutions delivering services
and changing behaviour in resilient and appropriate ways.
The impact of universal access to WASH on global health would be profound. There is the
potential to save the lives of the 829,000 people who currently die every year from diseases
directly caused by unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene practices, and we could
also drastically reduce child malnourishment, and help alleviate physical and mental under-
development. Today, 50% of child malnutrition is associated with unsafe water, inadequate
sanitation and poor hygiene. Women and girls would have the facilities and knowledge to be able
to manage their menstrual cycles in safety and dignity.
I am particularly interested in the area of WAH because there is the potential to save the lives of
people who currently die every year from diseases directly caused by unsafe water, inadequate
sanitation and poor hygiene practices. I also believe I can also drastically reduce child
malnourishment, and help alleviate physical and mental under-development. Through my
relentless work and advocacy I can contribute to the facilities and knowledge to be able to
manage their menstrual cycles of girls in safety and dignity.
I have participated in sanitation community awareness campaigns in Jinja and Abim district in
Northern Uganda. During this period I participated in sensitizing School and children in low-
income communities with no access to WASH. With my team, we sensitized the school going
children about the dangers of bad sanitation and warned them about the time they are bound to
lose when they are sick and unable to attend class due to sickness with a diarrhoeal disease or,
particularly in the case of girls.
