Design of Members For Compression: Chapter E

This document summarizes design provisions for members subject to axial compression. It discusses general provisions, slenderness limitations, effective length, and compressive strength determination based on flexural, torsional, and flexural-torsional buckling for members without slender elements. It also references other sections for additional buckling limit states and member types. Design is based on determining the nominal compressive strength as the lowest value from applicable buckling limit states and comparing to specified strength reductions or increases.

CHAPTER E

DESIGN OF MEMBERS FOR COMPRESSION

This chapter addresses members subject to axial compression through the centroidal
axis.
The chapter is organized as follows:

E1. General Provisions

E2. Slenderness Limitations and Effective Length
E3. Compressive Strength for Flexural Buckling of Members without Slender
Elements
E4. Compressive Strength for Torsional and Flexural-Torsional Buckling of
Members without Slender Elements
E5. Single Angle Compression Members
E6. Built-Up Members
E7. Members with Slender Elements

User Note: For members not included in this chapter the following sections apply:
rH1. – H3. Members subject to combined axial compression and flexure.
rH4. Members subject to axial compression and torsion.
rJ4.4 Compressive strength of connecting elements.
rI2. Composite axial members.

E1. GENERAL PROVISIONS

The design compressive strength, fc Pn , and the allowable compressive strength,
Pn /c , are determined as follows:
The nominal compressive strength, Pn , shall be the lowest value obtained accord-
ing to the limit states of flexural buckling, torsional buckling and flexural-torsional
buckling.
(a) For doubly symmetric and singly symmetric members the limit state of flexural
buckling is applicable.
(b) For singly symmetric and unsymmetric members, and certain doubly symmet-
ric members, such as cruciform or built-up columns, the limit states of torsional
or flexural-torsional buckling are also applicable.
fc = 0.90 (LRFD) c = 1.67 (ASD)
E2. SLENDERNESS LIMITATIONS AND EFFECTIVE LENGTH
The effective length factor, K, for calculation of column slenderness, KL /r, shall
be determined in accordance with Chapter C,

Sect. E3.] COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH FOR FLEXURAL BUCKLING 16.1-33

where
L = laterally unbraced length of the member, in. (mm)
r = governing radius of gyration, in. (mm)
K = the effective length factor determined in accordance with Section C2

User Note: For members designed on the basis of compression, the slender-
ness ratio KL/r preferably should not exceed 200.

E3. COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH FOR FLEXURAL BUCKLING

OF MEMBERS WITHOUT SLENDER ELEMENTS
This section applies to compression members with compact and noncompact sec-
tions, as defined in Section B4, for uniformly compressed elements.

User Note: When the torsional unbraced length is larger than the lateral
unbraced length, Section E4 may control the design of wide flange and similarly
shaped columns.
The nominal compressive strength, Pn , shall be determined based on the limit state
of flexural buckling.
Pn = Fcr A g (E3-1)
The flexural buckling stress, Fcr , is determined as follows:

KL E
(a) When ≤ 4.71 (or Fe ≥ 0.44Fy )
r Fy

 Fy
Fcr = 0.658 Fe Fy (E3-2)

KL E
(b) When > 4.71 (or Fe < 0.44Fy )
r Fy

Fcr = 0.877Fe (E3-3)

where
Fe = elastic critical buckling stress determined according to Equation E3-4,
Section E4, or the provisions of Section C2, as applicable, ksi (MPa)
2 E
Fe =  2 (E3-4)

User Note: The two equations for calculating the limits and applicability of
Sections E3(a) and E3(b), one based on KL/r and one based on Fe , provide the
same result.
