SESSION 7: CRIME AND PUNISHMENT

OBJECTIVES:
FUNCTIONS: Talking about different types of crimes, past actions and course of events,
expressing personal opinions and suggestions. Understand general and specific information
about the topic. Deal with moral dilemmas. Comment and respond to other people’s
comments.

GRAMMAR: Passive with modal verbs.

LEXIS: Crime and punishment related words and expressions. All types of crimes, criminals and
sentences are listed, including idioms and common expressions. Cohesive devices and pause
fillers to keep in conversations. Expressions to show and defend personal opinions. Structures
to respond to other people’s comments.

SOCIOLINGUISTICS: How to express opinion about current national related topics, show impact
of crime in their lives and how they deal with it. React to particular situations in which people
face a moral dilemma.

STARTING OFF

A crime is a serious offence such as murder or robbery. A punishment is a penalty imposed on


somebody who is convicted of a crime. A punishment could be, for example, time in prison or a
fine. There is an important difference between criminal law and civil law. Criminal law deals
with maters such as murder whereas Civil law deals with matters such as contracts or divorce.
The police are not normally involved in civil law.

Crime is everywhere you look at, no matter whether it is petty or major. We all can mention
offences that happen around us or that we hear of on the media brainstorm

POSSIBLE PUNISHMENTS. Please rank them from least to most serious ones 

life sentence, a prison term, a fine, death penalty, a caution, a night-time curfew, community
service (unpaid work), electronic tagging.

NOTE!!! Do you know the difference between theft, (armed) robbery, burglary and mugging?

- General word for taking someone else’s property.

- Stealing by using the threat of violence. It’s most often used for banks and shops. Guns can be
used aggravating the crime.

- Breaking into a building, often a house, and stealing.

- Stealing from someone in a public place using violence.

1) Do you know the TV series Breaking Bad? What can you say about it? Is there an evolution
in the type of offences that the protagonist carries out? What is your opinion on his
behaviour? Hero or a villain? How would you have reacted in his place?

The AMC series "Breaking Bad" follows the life of a man who, after learning he is terminally ill
with lung cancer, he applies his chemistry talents for financially stability in the most unexpected
way possible by making Crystal Meth.

Justice to fight crimes has evolved along the years from a brutal way to deal with issues to a
more civilised one. In Medieval times, offences faced a very peculiar trial in a most unusual
