Experimental Write Up Template

(1) The document describes an experiment to measure and compare the energy released from burning different foods (chocolate, marshmallows, crackers). (2) The prediction is that the food with more fat grams will release more heat and raise the temperature of water more than foods with fewer fat grams. (3) The method involves burning small amounts of each food under a test tube of water and measuring the starting and ending water temperatures. The temperature change will indicate the relative energy released by each food.

Measuring the amount of energy in different foods

Aim: To compare the energy between foods. So, I will be comparing the energy between
chocolate, marshmallows and crackers.

Information:

When food is set alight, energy is released.

This is an experiment to measure the energy given off when burning different foods.

Prediction

I think that what will happen is the food that contains more grams of fat will give off a higher
temperature when burned and it will heat the water more because food with less grams of fat give
off a lower temperature when burned.

Equipment/Apparatus

-Test tubes
-Test tubes stand and clamp
-Food (Chocolate, marshmallow, and crackers)
-Water
-Lighter
-aluminium bowl
-thermometer

Method (including diagram)

(1)-Have at least 20 ml of water in your test tube.

(2)-Get your test tube on your stand and also put your thermometer in
(3-Record the room temperature and also the initial water temperature
(4)-place the aluminium bowl under test tube to catch the burnt food that falls
(5)-record how the mass of the food
(6)-Light the food on fire and hold it directly under the test tube
(7)-wait till it burns out completely
(8)-record the temperature of the water
(9)-rinse the tub and toss away the scraps
(10)-repeat the steps for the remaining foods.

Tutorial.” Heat of Combustion of Food Chemistry Tutorial,

Variables

To make it a fair test, I am going to:

 keep these things the same: For this experiment, some stuff that I will keep the same is
the initial water temperature, and the initial volume of the water.

 change only this: The only thing that I might change for this experiment is the brand of
the food I use.

 I will measure temperature using a thermometer

Risk assessment
Possible hazards or dangers are burning myself and setting something on
fire.

To reduce the risk, I will wear gloves, closed toed shoes and set the
flammable items and fabrics far away from my workstation.
Results table

Draw your own table.

Think carefully about the headings and include the units.

Analysis

We know that it takes 4.18 Joules of energy to heat up one gram of water by 1 OC.
This is the specific heat capacity of water.

Also 1 cm3 of water has a mass of 1 gram. (the density of water)

An equation links the energy released by the burning food to the temperature rise in the water.

Energy = mass x specific heat capacity x temperature change

Where
 E is energy in Joules
 m is mass of water in grams
 DT is the temperature change in the water.

Calculate how much energy was released by each food and divide by the original mass of the food
to find the energy stored per gram.
Graph

Present your data using the most appropriate method.

I am going to use a: bar chart / pie chart / line graph.

Evaluation

Hint: We assumed that all the energy stored in the peanut was released and went into heating up
the water.
