This document provides instructions for an experiment on subnetting a network in Cisco Packet Tracer. It explains that subnetting allows you to divide a single Class A, B, or C network into multiple logical networks. The procedure has students subnet the 192.168.1.0/24 network into four subnets, assign IP addresses, configure routers with static routing, and test connectivity with ping commands. Questions at the end assess understanding of why subnetting is needed and how to perform subnetting on the given IP address.

Sub-netting in networks
1. Objective
This lab exercise is designed for understanding sub-netting in Cisco Packet Tracer.

2. Resources Required
• Computer
• Packet Tracer (version 5 or higher)

3. Introduction
Sub netting allows you to create multiple logical networks that exist within a single Class
A, B, or C network. If you do not subnet, you are only able to use one network from your
Class A, B, or C network, which is unrealistic.
Each data link on a network must have a unique network ID, with every node on that link
being a member of the same network. If you break a major network (Class A, B, or C) into
smaller sub networks, it allows you to create a network of interconnecting sub networks.
Each data link on this network would then have a unique network/sub network ID. Any
device, or gateway, that connects n networks/sub networks has n distinct IP addresses, one
for each network / sub network that it interconnects.
In order to subnet a network, extend the natural mask with some of the bits from the host
ID portion of the address in order to create a sub network ID.
4. Procedure
1. Subnet 192.168.1.0/24 network and make the following subnet based network in
packet tracer. Add modules in routers if needed.

2. Assign IP addresses and default gateways to the end users (PCs) according to the
subnets provided in the diagram
3. Give IP addresses to the router interfaces accordingly.
4. Configure the routers using static routing for the networks which are not directly
connected.

5. Ping the two PCs and verify the connections.
6. Paste the results
