WK 2 Math GR 10 PDF

The document contains lesson notes on plane geometry for a 10th grade mathematics class. It covers topics related to angles and arcs determined by lines intersecting inside and on a circle over two weeks. The first week discusses concepts such as the measure of an angle inscribed in a circle being half the measure of the subtending arc. The second week covers similar concepts for lines intersecting outside a circle. Examples and exercises are provided to help students apply the concepts.

HILLSIDE SCHOOL

LESSON NOTE FORMAT FOR 2013 ACADEMIC YEAR

TEACHER’S NAME: SAMUEL MEKONEN SUBMISSION DATE:

27/01/2013

SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS WEEK: TWO

GRADE & SECTION: 10

PAGES: 246 - 255

CHAPTER/UNIT: 6/ PLANE GEOMETRY PERIOD/WEEK: 3

TOPICS: ANGLE AND ARCS DETERMINED BY LINES INTERSECTING INSIDE AND

ON A CIRCLE

LESSON OBJECTIVE/S: AT THE END OF THIS LESSON THE STUDENT WILL BE

ABLE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO CIRCLES, LINES AND ANGLES.

SUMMARISED NOTE

The measure of an angle inscribed in a circle is half the measure of the arc subtending it.

An angle inscribed in a semi-circle is a right angle.

An angle inscribed in an arc less than a semi-circle is obtuse.

An angle inscribed in an arc greater than a semi-circle is acute.

Two parallel lines intercept congruent arcs on the same circle.

An angle formed by a tangent and a chord drawn from the point of tangency is half the arc it
intercepts.

The measure of an angle formed by the intersection of two chords inside a circle is half the sum
of the measures of the arcs subtending the angle and its vertically opposite angle.

Exercises

1. An angle formed by two intersecting chords within a circle is and one of the
intercepted arc measures then find the measure of the other intercepted arc.
2. In the above figure, if AB//PQ, m (<BOQ) = , PQ = 5units, m ( ̂ ) = , and O is
the center of the circle, then find a) m (<AOP) b) the length of ̅̅̅̅.

WEEK: Two PAGES: 256-260 CHAPTER/UNIT: 6

TOPICS: Angle and arcs determined by lines intersecting outside of a circle.

LESSON OBJECTIVE/S: At the end of this lesson the student will be able to define terms and
solve problems related to circles, lines and angles.

SUMMARISED NOTE

The measure of an angle formed by the lines of two chords intersecting outside a circle is half the
difference of the measures of the arcs they intercept.

The measure of an angle formed by a tangent and a secant drawn to a circle from a point outside
a circle is equal to one half the difference of the measure of the intercepted arcs.

If a secant and a tangent are drawn from a point outside a circle, then the square of the length of
the tangent is equal to the product of the lengths of the line segments.

That is: = (PB)(PC)

Exercises

1. If ̅̅̅̅ is tangent to the circle, ̅̅̅̅ and ̅̅̅̅ secant lines, ̅̅̅̅ chord, ̅̅̅̅ = 6, ̅̅̅̅ = 4, ̅̅̅̅ = 8,
̅̅̅̅ = 9 and ̅̅̅̅ = 3units, then then find ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ and ̅̅̅̅.

SUMMARIZED NOTE
An angle formed by the intersection of two secant and tangent lines outside the circle can
be determined by the following formulas:

(PA)(PB) = (PX)(PY) M(<P) = (m(AXD) – m(BD))

Example: If ̅̅̅̅ = 12cm, ̅̅̅̅ = 10cm and ̅̅̅̅ = 14cm, then find the lengths of ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ .

Solution

(PA) (PB) = (PC) (PD)

(AB+PB) (PB) = (PC) (PC + DC)

(AB + 12) (12) = (14) (14 + 10)

AB = 16cm, = (PA) (PB),  PT = 4√ cm.
