tväm älébhiù parivåtäm idam eva yäce

våndavana - Våndavana; isvari - O queen; vayaù - of youthfulness; guna - of transcendental


virtues; rupa - of beauty; lila - of pastimes; saubhagya - of good fortune; keli - of playfulness;
karuna - of mercy; jaladhe - O ocean; avadhehi - please give Your attention; dasi-bhavani - let
me become Your maidservant; sukhayani - let me please You; sada - always; sa-kantam - with
Your lover; tvam - You; alibhiù - by Your gopi-friends; parivrtam - accompanied; idam - this;
eva - certainly; yace - I beg.

O queen of Våndävana! O great ocean of youthfulness, virtues, beauty, pastimes, good-


fortune, playfulness and compassion, please hear my prayer! Let me be Your maidservant. I
will always please You, who stay with Your beloved and Your friends. I beg this of You!

çåìgärayäëi bhavatém abhisärayäëi


vékñyaiva känta-vadanaà parivåtya yäntém
dhåtväïcalena hari-sannidhim änayäni
sampräpya tarjana-sudhäà håñitä bhaväni

sangarayani - let me decorate; bhavatim - You; abhisarayani - let me arrange for Your
rendezvous with Kåñna; viksya - seeing; eva - certainly; kanta - of Your lover; vadanam - the
face; parivrtya - turning around; yantim - going; dhrtva - clutching; ancalena - the corner of
Your cloth; hari-sannidhim - to Hari; anayani - let me bring; samprapya - attaining; tarjana - of
scolding; sudham - the nectar; hrsita - jubilant; bhavani - let me become.

I will decorate You and arrange Your meeting with Kåñëa. When you see Your lover's face,
You slightly turn away from Him. Then I will clutch the edge of Your cloth and bring You to
Hari. Attaining the nectar of Your rebukes, I will become very happy.

Text 3

päde nipatya çirasänunayäni ruñöäà


täà pratyapäìga-kalikäm api cälayäni
tad-dor-dvayena sahasä parirambhayäni
romäïca-kaïcukavatém avalokayäni

pade - at Your lotus feet; nipatya - falling; sirasa - with my head; anunayani - I will pacify;
rustam - angry; tam prati - towards Him; apanga - of sidelong glances; kalikam – the flower
bud; api - even; calayani - I will cause to go; tat - of Him; doh-dvayena - by the arms; sahasa -
suddenly; parirambhayani - I will cause to embrace; romanca-kancukavatim - with hairs
standing up in ecstasy; avalokayani - I will see.

When You are angry I will fall with my head at Your feet and pacify You. I will encourage
You to throw flower-bud glances at Your lover. I will encourage Him to suddenly embrace
You with His arms. I will see You in ecstasy, the hairs of Your body standing up.

Text 4

präëa-priye kusuma-talpam alaìkuru tvam


ity acyutokti-makaranda-rasaà dhayäni
mäà muïca mädhava satém iti gadgadärdha-
väcas tavaitya nikaöaà harim äkñipäni

prana - as life; priye - as dear; kusuma - of flowers; talpam - this bed; alankuru - please
become the ornament; tvam - You; iti - thus; acyuta - of Acyuta; ukti - of the words; makaranda-
rasam - the honey; dhayani - I will drink; mam - me; munca - abandon; madhava - O Madhava;
satim - chaste; iti - thus; gadgada - choked up; ardha-vacaù - soft words; tava - of You; etya -
attaining; nikatam - near; harim - Hari; aksipani - I will scold.

I will drink the honey-nectar of Acyuta’s words, "O Prana-priye! O beloved, more dear to
Me than My life! Come and decorate this flower bed!" When I hear Your choked soft words,
"Leave Me, Madhava! I am a pious, chaste girl!", I will scold Hari.

vämäm udasya nija-vakñasi tena ruddhäm


änanda-bäñpa-timitäà muhur ucchalantém
vyastälakäà skhalita-veëém abaddha-névéà
tväà vékñya sädhu janur eva kåtärthayäni

vamam - contrary; udasya - turning away; nija - on Your; vaksasi - breasts; tena - by Him;
ruddham - stopped; ananda - of bliss; baspa - with tears; timitam - moistened; muhuù -
continually; ucchalantim - moving; vyasta - disarrayed; alakam - hair; skhalita - undone; venim
- braids; abaddha - untied; nivim - underwear; tvam - You; viksya - seeing; sadhu - successful;
januù - birth; eva - certainly; krta-arthayani - I will be satisfied.

Seeing You being contrary, trying to flee, stopped by His hand on Your breast, crying tears
of happiness, and struggling for a moment, Your hair disarrayed, braids lossened, and
garments untied, I will consider my birth successful.

talpe mayaiva racite bahu-çilpa-bhäji


pauñpe niveçya bhavatéà nananeti väcam
kåñëaà sukhena ramayantam ananta-lélaà
vätäyanäkta nayanaiva nibhälayäni

talpe - on the bed; maya - by me; eva - certainly; racite - fashioned; bahu - with great; silpa-
bhaji - artistry; pauspe - made of flowers; nivesya - placing; bhavatim - You; na na na - No! No!
No!; iti - thus; vacam - words; Kåñëam - Kåñëa; sukhena - with delight; ramayantam - delighting;
ananta - unlimited; lilam - pastimes; vatayana-akta - at the window; nayana - with my eyes; eva
- certainly; nibhalayani - I will see.

As Kåñëa places You on the bed I artistically decorated with flowers, You will resist Him,
saying, "No! No! No!" Through the window of the kuïja, I will see You enjoying endless
pastimes with Kåñna.

Text 7

sthitvä bahir vyajana-yantra-nibaddha-òoré-


päëir vikarñaëa-vaçän mådu béjayäni
uttuìga-keli-kalita-çrama-bindu-jälam
älopayäni maëitaiù smitam udgéräëi

sthitva - staying; bahiù - outside; vyajana-yantra-nibaddha-dori - holding the rope tied to a


fan; panih - in my hands; vikarsana-vasat - by moving; mrdu - gently; bijayani - I will fan;
uttunga - exalted; keli - from the pastimes; kalita - produced; srama-bindu-jalam - drops of
perspiration; alopayani - I will remove; manitaiù - because of the lovers' cooing; smitam-
udgirani - I will smile.

Staying outside and holding the rope tied to a fan in the kuïja, I will gently moving it.
Thus I will cool You and remove the network of perspiration woven by Your exalted
pastimes. Hearing Your lover's cooing, I will smile.

çré-rüpa-maïjari-mukha-priya-kiìkaréëäm
ädeçam eva satataà çirasä vahäni
tenaiva hanta tulasé paramänukampä-
pätrébhaväni karaväëi sukhena seväm

çré-rupa-manjari - Sri Rupa-manjari; mukha - beginning with; priya - dear; kinkarinam - of


the maidservants; adesam - orders; eva - certainly; satatam - always; sirasa - on my head; vahani

- I will carry; tena - by this; eva - certainly; hanta - indeed; tulasi - of Tulasi; parama -
transcendental; anukampa - of mercy; patri-bhavani - I will become the recipient; karavani - I
will engage; sukhena - happily; sevam - in their service.

I will always carry on my head the orders of Çri Rüpa-maïjari and Your other dear
maidservants. Thus becoming the recipient of Tulasé’s mercy, I will happily serve.

mälyäni hära-kaöakädi-måjä vicitra-


vartiù çitäàçu-ghusåëäguru-candanädi
véöér lavaìga-khapurädi-yutäù sakhébhiù
särdhaà mudä viracayäni kaläà prakäçya

malyani - garlands; hara - necklaces; kataka - and bracelets; adi - beginning with; mrja -
polishing; vicitra - wonderful; vartiù - ointment; sita-amsu - camphor; ghusrna - kunkuma;
aguru - aguru; candana - sandalwood paste; adi - beginning with; vitiù - tambula; lavanga -
cloves; khapura - khapura; adi - and other substances; yutaù - with; sakhibhih sardham - with
the gopis; muda - happily; viracayani - I will do; kalam - expertise; prakasya - showing.

With Your friends I will happily and skillfully string garlands, polish necklaces and
ornaments, make wonderful ointments of camphor, kuìkuma, aguru, sandal and other
scents, and prepare tämbüla with cloves, camphor and other ingredients.

tväà srasta-veña-vasanäbharaëäà sakäntäà


vékñya prasädhana-vidhau drutam udyatäbhiù
çré-rüpa-raìga-tulasé-rati-maïjarébhir
dåñöänayäni tava saàmukham eva täni

tvam - You; srasta - dropped; vesa-vasana - garments; abharanam - and ornaments; sa - with;
kantam - Your lover; viksya - seeing; prasadhana-vidhau - at the time of decoration; drutam -
quickly; udyatabhiù - intent; çré-rupa - Sri Rupa-manjari; ranga - Ranga; tulasi - Tulasi; rati-
manjaribhiù - and Rati-manjari; dåñöa - saw; anayani - I will bring; tava – in Your; sammukham
- presence; eva - certainly; tani - them.

Noticing, as they decorate You, that You and Your beloved are missing some garments
and ornaments, Çri Rüpa, Raìga, Tulasé and Rati-maïjari will glance at me, and I will bring
them.

tväm äçikhä-caraëa-müòha-vicitra-veñäà
sprañöuà punaç ca dhåta-tåñëam avekñya kåñëam
äyäntam eva vikaöa-bhrü-kuöé-vibhaìga-
huìkåty-udañcita-mukhé vinivartayäni

tvam - You; asikha - from the top of Your head; carana - to Your feet; mudha - charming;
vicitra - wonderful; vesam - appearance; sprastum - to touch; punaù - again; ca - and; dhrta-
tåñëam - thirsty; aveksya - seeing; kåñëam - Kåñëa; ayantam - approaching; eva - certainly; vikata
- formidable; bhru - of the eyebrows; kuti - knitted; vibhanga - movements; hunkrti - rebukes;
udancita - spoken; mukhi - from my mouth; vinivartayani - I will check.

Seeing Kåñëa approach, thirsting to touch You, who are so wonderfully beautiful from
head to foot, I will stop Him with my menacing knitted eyebrows and angry words.

tatraitya vismayavatéà lalitäà pratéha


sädhvétva-kaëöaka-viniñkramanärtham asyäù
präptaà nyasiddhad ayi mäm iyam eva dhürtety
uktià hareù sva-håd-alià rasayäni nityam

tatra - there; etya - having gone; vismayavatim - astonished; lalitam prati - to Lalita; iha - here;
sadhvitva - of chastity; kantaka - the thorn; viniskramana-artham - to remove; asyaù - of her;
praptam - attained; nyasiddhat - checks; ayi - Oh; mam - Me; iyam - this; eva - certainly; dhurta
– rascal; iti - thus; uktim – the statement; hareù - of Hari; sva - my; hrt - of the heart; alim - the
bumblebee; rasayani - cause to relish; nityam - continually.

The bumblebee of my heart will again and again relish Hari's words about astonished
Lalitä, "I come to remove the thorn of chastity pinching Rädhä, but this rogue girl tries to
stop Me!"

niñkramya kuïja-bhavanäd vipine vihartuà


käntaika-bähu-parirabdha-tanuà prayäntém
tväm älébhiù saha kathopakathä-praphulla-
vakträm ahaà vyajana-päëir anuprayäëi

niskramya - leaving; kunja - in the grove; bhavanat - the cottage; vipine - in the forest;
vihartum - to perform pastimes; kanta - of Your lover; eka - one; bahu - by the arm; parirabdha
- embraced; tanum - body; prayantim - going; tvam - You; alibhih saha - with Your friends;
katha-upakatha - with conversation; praphulla - blossomed with happiness; vaktram - face;
aham - I; vyajana - with a fan; paniù - in my hand; anuprayani - shall follow.

Carrying a fan in my hand, I will follow You as, Your form embraced by Your beloved's
arm, and Your face blossoming with happiness as You talk with Your friends, You leave the
kuïja to enjoy pastimes in the forest.

Text 14

gäyäni te guëa-gaëäàs tava vartma gamyaà


puñpästarair mådulayäni sugandhayäni
sälé-tatiù pratipadaà sumano’tivåñöià
sväminy ahaà pratidiçaà tanaväni bäòham

gayani - I will sing; te - Your; guna - of virtues; ganan - the host; tava - Your; vartma - on the
path; gamyam - traversed; puspa - of flowers; astaraiù - covering; mrdulayani - I will make soft;
sugandhayani - I will make aromatic; sa - with; ali-tatiù - Your gopi-friends; pratipadam - at
every step; sumanaù - of flowers; ati - a great; vrstim - rain; svamini - O my queen; aham - I;
pratidisam - in all directions; tanavani – I will spread; badham - indeed.

I will sing Your glories and make Your path soft and fragrant by sprinkling flowers. O
Svamini, Your friends and I will shower You with flowers at every step!

preñöha-svapäni kåta-kausuma-hära käïcé


keyüra-kuëòala-kiréöa-viräjitäìgém
tväà bhüñayäëi punar ätma-kavitva-puñpair
äsvädayäni rasikäli-tatér imäni

preñöha - by Your lover; sva - with His own; päni - hand; kåta - done; kausuma - made of
flowers; hära - necklace; käïcé - sash; keyüra - armlet; kuëòala - earrings; kiréöa - and crown;
viräjita - shining; aìgém - body; tväà - You; bhusayani - I will decorate; punaù - repeatedly;
atma - my own; kavitva - of poetic art; puspaiù - with the flowers; asvadayani - cause to relish;
rasika - expert in relishing transcendental mellows; ali-tatiù - the gopis; imani - these.

When with His own hand Your lover decorates Your limbs with a flower-necklace, flower-
sash, flower-armlets, flower-earrings and flower-crown, I will decorate You with flowers of
my poetry. Thus I will give pleasure to all Your friends who are expert in relishing rasa.

candräàçu-rüpya-salilair avasikta-rodha-
syaïcat-kadamba-surabhävali-géta-kérti
ärabdha-räsa-rabhasäà hariëä saha tväà
tat-päöhitaiva viduñé kalayäni véëäm

candra-amsu - of the moonlight; rupya - silver; salilaiù - by the waters; avasikta - sprinkled;
rodhasi - on the shore; ancat - bending; kadamba - of the kadamba tree; surabha - the aroma;
avali - of the bees; gita-kirti – singing glories; arabdha - begun; rasa - of the rasa-dance;
rabhasam - agitated; harina saha - with Hari; tvam - You; tat-pathita - taught by You; eva -
certainly; vidusi - expert; kalayani - I will play; vinam - the vina.

When the waters of Yamuna, silver like moonlight, splash on the shore, bumblebees sing
Your glories near the fragrant kadamba trees, and You enthusiastically begin the rasa-dance
with Hari, I, Your expert music student, will play the véëä.

Text 17

räsaà samäpya dayitena samaà sakhébhir


viçränti-bhäji nava-mälatikä-nikuïje
tvayy änayäni rasavat karakämra-rambhä
dräkñädikäni sarasaà pariveñayäëi

rasam - the rasa-dance; samapya - concluding; dayitena samam - with Your beloved;
sakhibhiù - with Your gopi-friends; visranti-bhaji - in a resting place; nava - fresh; malatika - of
malati flowers; nikunje - in a grove; tvayi - to You; anayani - I will bring; rasavat - full of nectar;
karaka - pomegranates; amra - mangoes; rambha - plantains; draksa - grapes; adikani – and
other fruits; sa-rasam - with love; parivesayani - I will serve.

When the rasa-dance ends, and You rest with Your beloved and friends in a new jasmine
grove, I will bring sweet pomegranates, mangoes, bananas, grapes and other fruits and
lovingly serve them to You.

talpe saroja-dala-kÿptam anaìga-keli-


paryäptam äpta-kalayä racitaà tulasyä
tväà preyasä saha rasäd adhiçäyayäni
tämbülam äçäyitum ulbanam ullasäni

talpa - the bed; saroja - lotus; dala - of petals; klptam - fashioned; ananga-keli - conjugal
pastimes; paryaptam - at the conclusion; apta – with full; kalaya - artistry; racitam - fashioned;
tulasyam - by Tulasi; tvam - You; preyasa saha - with Your beloved; rasat - sweetly;
adhisayayani - I will cause to take rest; tambulam - tambula; asayitum - to eat; ulbanam - very
much; ullasani - I will feel happy.

When Your loving pastimes are over, I will lovingly put You and Your beloved to rest on
the bed of lotus petals expertly made by Tulasé, and with great joy offer You both tämbüla.

saàvähayäni caraëävalakaiù spåçäni


jighräëi saurabha-samüòha-camatkriyäbdhiù
akñëor dadhäny urasijau parirambhayäni
cumbäny alakñitam avekñita-saukumäryäù

samvahayani - I will massage; caranau - Your lotus feet; alakaiù - with my hair; sprsani - I
will touch; jighrani - I will smell; saurabha - of sweet fragrance; samudha-camatkriya - of
wonder; abdhiù - in the ocean; aksnoù – with my eyes; dadhani – I will place; urasijau - on the
breasts; parirambhayani - I will embrace; cumbani - I will kiss; alaksitam - unobserved; aveksita
- seen; saukumaryaù - tenderness.

I will massage Your feet with my hair, touch them, smell the wonderful ocean of their
fragrance, gaze on their delicate beauty and tenderness, embrace them, hold to my breasts,
and, unobserved by anyone, kiss them.

Niçänta-lila (3:36 a.m.-6:00 a.m.)

ante niças tanutara-prasåtälakälyä


täòaìka-hära-tati-gandhavahägra-muktäù
preñöhasya te tava ca saàgrathitä nibhälya
tatränayäni paramäpta-sakhéù prabodhya

ante - at the end; nisaù - of the night; tanutara - very fine; prasrta - dishevelled; alaka-alya -
with the hair; tadanka - earrings; hara - necklaces; tati - series; gandha-vaha - nose; agra - at the
tip; muktaù - pearl; presthasya te - of Your beloved; tava - of You; ca - and; samgrathitaù -
knotted; nibhalya - seeing; tatra - there; anayani - I will bring; parama-apta-sakhiù - parama-
prestha-sakhis; prabodhya - awakening.

At the night's end, when I see Your earrings, necklaces and nose-pearl hopelessly tangled
in the dishevelled hair of You and Your lover, I will awaken Your dearest sakhés and bring
them there.

Text 21

tä darçayäni sukha-sindhuñu majjayäni


täbhyaù prasädam atulaà sahasäpnuväni
tan-nüpurädi-raëitair gata-sändra-nidräà
çayyotthitäà sa-cakitäà bhavatéà bhajäni

taù - to them; darsayani - showing; sukha - of happinss; sindhusu - in the ocean; majjayani -
I will immerse them; tabhyaù - from them; prasadam - mercy; atulam - incomparable; sahasa –
at once; apnuvani - I will attain; tat - of them; nupura - of the ankle-bells; adi – and other
ornaments; ranitaiù - by the tinkling sounds; gata - gone; sandra - deep; nidram - sleep; sayya -
from the bed; utthitam - arisen; sa - with; cakitam - fear; bhavatim - You; bhajani - I will worship.

I will show this sight to Your friends and thus immerse them in an ocean of happiness.
At once I will attain their unlimited mercy. When, awakened from deep sleep by the tinkling
of their anklets and other ornaments, You timidly rise from bed, I will worship You.

he svämini priya-sakhé-trapayäkuläyä
käntäìgatas tava viyoktum apärayantyäù
udgranthayäny alaka-kuëòala-mälya-muktä-
granthià vicakñaëatayäìguli-kauçalena

he svamini - O my queen; priya-sakhi - of Your dear friends; trapaya akulayah - embarrassed;


kanta - of Your lover; angataù - from the limbs; tava - Your; viyoktam - to free Yourself;
aparayantyaù - being unable; udgranthayani - I will untie; alaka - hair; kundala - earrings; malya
- necklaces; mukta – and nose-pearl; granthim - the knot; vicaksanataya - with expetise; anguli
- of my fingers; kausalena - with art.

O Svamini, when, embarrassed before Your friends, You cannot separate Yourself from
Your lover's limbs, with the skill of my fingers I will expertly untie your hairs, earrings,
necklaces and nose-pearl.

Text 23

näçägrataù çruti-yugäc ca viyojayäni


tad-bhüñaëaà maëi-saräàs tu visütrayäëi
präëärbudäd adhikam eva sadä tavaikaà
romäpi devi kalayäni kåtävadhänä

nasa - of the nose; agrataù - from the tip; çruti-yugat - from the ears; ca - and; vi-yojayani - I
will remove; tat-bhusanam - the ornament; mani-saran - the jewels; tu - also; visutrayani – I will
untie; prana - of lives; arbudat - than millions; adhika - more valuable; eva - certainly; sada -
always; tava - of You; ekam - a single; roma - hair; api - even; devi - O queen; kalayani - I will
see; krta-avadhana - carefully.

I will remove the ornaments from Your nose and ears, and untie Your jewel necklace. O
Devi, I will do this with great care, for a single hair of Yours is more dear to me than a
hundred millions of my lives!

tväà sälim ätma-sadanaà nibhåtaà vrajantéà


tyaktvä harer anupathaà tad alakñitaitya
taà khaëòitäm anunayantam avekñya candräà
tad-våttam äli-tati-saàsadi varëayäni

tam - You; sa - with; alim - Your gopi-friends; atma - to Your own; sadanam - house;
nibhrtam - secretly; vrajantim - going; tyaktva - having given up; hareù - of Hari; anupatham -
the following; tat - by Him; alaksita - unobserved; etya - going; tam – to Him; khanditam -
rejected; anunayantam - following; aveksya - saw; candram - Candravali; tat - of her; vrttam -
behavior; ali-tati - of the gopis; samsadi - in the assembly; varnayani - I will describe.

As You and Your friends go home I will secretly leave the group and, unseen, follow Kåñna.
I will see Him pacifying Candrävali, whom He had formerly betrayed and will describe this
news to Your sakhés.

Prätaù-lila (6:00 a.m.-8:24 a.m.)

prakñälayäni vadanaà salilaiù sugandhair


dantän rasälaja-dalais tava dhävayäni
nirëejayäni rasanäà tanu-hema-patryä
sandarçayäni mukuraà nipuëaà pramåjya

praksalayani - I will wash; vadanam - Your face; salilaiù - with water; sugandhaiù - aromatic;
dantan - Your teeth; rasala-ja - mango; dalaiù - with leaves; tava - Your; dhavayani - I will clean;
nirne jayani - I will clean; rasanam - Your tongue; tanu - thin; hema - with a golden; patrya -
instrument; sandarsayani - I will show; mukuram - a mirror; nipunam - expertly; pramrjya -
polished.

I will wash Your face with scented water, brush Your teeth with mango leaves, and clean
Your tongue with a thin golden instrument. I will show You Yourself in a perfectly polished
mirror.

Text 26

snänäya sükñma-vasanaà paridhäpayäni


häräìgadädy apy aìgäd avatärayäëi
abhyaïjayäëy aruëa-saurabha-hådya-tailair
vartayäni nava-kuìkuma-candra-cürëaiù

I will bathe You with most aromatic water and dry Your limbs with a fine cloth. I will
quickly and carefully dry Your hair with aguru incense and thus make it very fragrant.

I will dress You in charming garments, comb Your hair with a golden comb, braid it with
a variety of perfect flowers, and place a shining jewelled ornament at the end of Your braid.

O Devi, I will place a jewel ornament and string of pearls upon Your head, and joyfully
paint a wonderful tilaka on Your forehead. I will apply mascara on Your eyes, decorate Your
ears with jewelled earrings, and adorn Your nose with an ornament.

I will paint makaris on Your cheeks and an attractive dot of musk on Your chin, draw
colorful pictures on Your breasts, and carefully place jewelled armlets on Your arms and
sapphire bangles on Your wrists.

a great heap of pious merits.

O Devi, when I have accumulated a great heap of pious merits I will be able to encircle
Your hips with a belt, ornament Your lotus feet with sweetly tinkling ankle-bells, place rings
studded with tiny bells on Your petal-like toes, and anoint the soles of Your lotus feet with
red lac.

O Devi, I will worship Your naturally fragrant limbs by anointing them with fresh
kuìkuma. I will place a play lotus in Your hand and bring a jewelled mirror so You can see
Your beauty.

Seeing Your wonderful beauty reflected in the mirror, You will yearn to be seen by Your
lover's bumblebee eyes, and Your limbs will tremble. At that moment, with my body drowned
in tears, I will worship You with a camphor lamp and offer my life to You millions of times.

Your dear sakhés go to prepare breakfast for Kåñëa, I will follow behind, carrying in my
hands a box of tämbüla, a jewelled fan and other items.

moistening You with tears, I will also offer obeisances to her with great devotion.

- giving freedom from diseases; asi - You are; amåta-paniù – nectar-handed; abhuù - You
became; varena - by a benediction; durvasasaù - of Durvasa Muni; yat - which; iti - thus; tat - of
her; vacasa - because of the words; hasani - I will smile.

"You are the personified austerity of King Våñabhänu's family and a good fortune for my
house, me and my son! O most beautiful one, because of Durväsä's blessing, whatever You
touch with Your hands becomes nectar, and thus Your cooking bestows freedom from all
diseases!" Hearing these words of Yaçodä, I will smile.

snätänulipta-vapuño dayitasya tasya


tät-kälike madhurimany atilolitäkñém
sväminy avetya bhavatéà kvacana pradeçe
tatraiva kena ca miñeëa samänayäni

snata-anulipta - bathed and anointed; vapusaù - body; dayitasya - of Your beloved; tasya -
of Him; tat-kalike – at that time; madhurimani - in the sweetness; ati - greatly; lolita - agitated;
aksim - eyes; svamini - O queen; avetya - attaining; bhavatim - You; kvacana pradese - where?;
tatra - there; eva - certainly; kena – by what; ca - and; misena - ruse; samanayani - I will bring.

O Svamini, after Your beloved has taken bath and anointed His body with fragrant
ointments, and Your eyes are restless to see His sweetness, what ruse will I fabricate to bring
You to Him?

unsuitable; yat - because; tat - therefore; uttarayani - I will remove; tat - them; idam - these; tu -
indeed; tava - yours; astu - are; iti - thus; tvat - Your; vaca - by the statement; ullasani - I will
become jubilant; vikasat - blossoming; madhu - in the spring; madhavi - a madhavi creeper; iva
- like.

I will wash Your feet and remove from Your body necklaces, garlands and other
ornaments that would interfere with Your cooking. When You say to me, "These things are
yours", I will be joyful like a blossoming mädhavé vine in spring season.

vidha - four kinds; annam - of food; tvam - You; lokayani – I will see; na - no; na - no; na - no;
iti - thus; muhuù - repeatedly; vadantim - saying; gostha-isaya - by Yasoda, the Queen of Vraja;
api - even; parivesayitum - to serve the meal; nidistam - requested.

When You have cooked a big variety of the four kinds of preparations, such as sweet rice,
vegetables, soups, rice and other dishes that rebuke the taste of nectar, Queen Yaçodä asks
You to serve the meal. At that time, I will watch as You shyly refuse, again and again saying,
"No! No! No!"

tåpty-utthitäà priyatamäìga-rucià dhayantyä


vätäyantärpita-dåçaù sahasollasantyäù
änanda-ja-dyuti-taraìga-bhare manoja-
maïju-kåte tava mano mama majjayäni

Having finished His meal, Kåñëa feels most satisfied. When, Your eyes at the window, You
happily drink the lustrous beauty of Your beloved, and Your heart is plunged in waves of
shining amorous bliss, my heart will also fall in those waves.

"O Rädhä, this house is Yours, and I am also Yours! O daughter! O most auspicious girl!
How can I consider You different from my son? Now please eat in front of me!" I will eternally
relish in my heart the sweetness of your smile that will appear on Your face upon hearing
these words of Queen Yaçodä.

crying, follow Him. After seeing His departure, You will return to Your home, and on the
pretext of worshipping the Sun-god You will go from there to the forest. At that time I will
go with You.

When You see Your beloved, You begin to pick flowers while I follow you with a leaf
basket. I will remember how You gaze at Him when He says, "Who is this flower thief?" and
You answer, "No one!"

uktyaiva puñpa-puöikäm api gopayäni
tad vékñya hanta mama kakña-tale kñipantaà
päëià balät tam abhimåçya bhaväni dünä

When He says, "O Thief! Show Me how many flowers You have stolen!", I will hide the
flower-basket. When His hand forcibly takes it from me I will become very unhappy.

Anxiously saying, "O Devi, save me! Be kind to me, Your maidservant!", I will take shelter
of You. You will say, "Rascal, why do You trouble My friend?" and slap Kåñëa’s arm, thus
giving me protection.

tyaktvaiva mäà bhavad-uraù-kavacaà vikhaëòya


präptäà çrajaà tava galät sva-gale nidhäya
puñpäëi cauri mama kià tava kaëöha-hetos
tat-kaëöham eva subhåçaà paripéòayäni

tyaktva - abandoning; eva - certainly; mam - me; bhavat - Your; urah-kavacam - bodice;
vikhandya - removing; praptam - attained; srajam - garland; tava - Your; galat - from the neck;
sva-gale – on His own neck; nidhaya - placing; puspani - flowers; cauri – O thief; mama - My;
kim - why?; tava - Your; kantha-hetoù - neck; tat-kantham - Your neck; eva - certainly; subhrsam
- tightly; paripidayani - I will squeeze.

When, turning from me, Kåñëa removes Your bodice, takes the garland from Your neck,
puts it on His own, and says, "Thief, why do You wear My flowers on Your neck? For this
crime I will embrace you tightly in my arms!"

tasyäjïayaiva sahasä ca vivastrayiñye
täà vékñya håñyati sa cen nija-divya-muktä-

You will say, "You are not at fault. Although You are the son of Vrajaraja Nanda, You have
become a servant of a wicked king, and now You think as he does. I only ask: Why did the
creator Brahmä write this fate on the forehead of Me, a chaste and pious girl?"

sväbhyäà dhayäny udara-püram athekñaëäbhyäm
rüpämåtaà tava sa-käntatayä viläsa-

the Yogapéöh, I will lovingly worship You with pädya, arghya, incenses, a camphor lamp,
four kinds of food, garlands, ornaments and other offerings.

At the time of the spring Holi festival, as with an army of hundreds of bold friends You go
to Madhuvana at Govardhana Hill to defeat Your beloved in the battle of colored dyes, I will
arm You with many flasks of fresh red dye.

yadi - if; te - of You; hrdi - in the heart; virata - heroism; asti - there is.

Kåñëa will say, "I stand bare-chested before You, and I will not move from this spot. If You
think You are strong, then bombard Me with flowers! Open Your bodice and show Your
chest. Stand and fight, if there is any heroism in Your heart!"

kila - certainly; asit - had been; mithya - false; eva - certainly; tat - that; yat - which; iha - here;
bhoù - Oh!; katisaù - how many times?; jitaù - defeated; abhut - have been; mat-kinkaribhiù -
by My maidservants; api - even; tat-vigata-trapaù - devoid of Your glorious reputation; asi - You
are.

You will say, "We have heard that in Your previous births You were never defeated, but
this is a lie. O, how many times did My maidservants defeat You? You are shameless!"

yuddham - battle; mukha-amukhi - face-to-face; rada-aradi - tooth-to-tooth; caru - attractive;
bahu-bahavi - arm-to-arm; amanda - ferocious; nakhara-anakhari - nail-to-nail; stavani - I
glorify.

When I hear these words I will become jubilant, and glorify the ferocious battle of the Holi
festival, where the tinkling of the gopés’ bangles are the dundubhi war-drums, and the two
opposing armies mercilessly fight face-to-face, tooth-to-tooth, arm-to-arm and nail-to-nail.

sa preyasi tvayi sakhé-çata-veñöitäyäm

upatyakayam - at the base; sa preyasi - with Your beloved; tvayi - to You; sakhi - of gopi-friends;
sata - by hundreds; vestitayam - surrounded; visranti-bhaji - at the resting-place; vana-devataya
- by the goddess of Våndavana forest; upanita - brought; nistani - palatable; sidhu - of nectar;
casakani - goblets; puraù - before; dadhani - I may place.

As You and Your beloved rest, surrounded by hundreds of gopés in a splendid place at the
foot of Govardhana Hill, the king of mountains, I will get goblets of honey wine from the
goddess of Våndävana and offer them to You.

Drinking this nectar You will become intoxicated and exclaim, "O, why-why-why is the
ea-earth spi-spi-spinning? Why are the trees ru-ru-ru-running away in fear? I am a-a-a-afraid!
How will I su-survive?" Frightened, You will cling to Your beloved's neck.

tvat-sväminé pralapatéyam imäà gadena


hénäà karomi kalayätra nirehi netaù
ity ukti-sédhu-rasa-tarpita-håt tadaiva
niñkramya jäla vitatau vidadhäni netre

tvat-svamini - your mistress; pralapati - speaking; imam - this; gadena – because of


intoxication; hinam - free; karomi - I will make; kalaya - just listen; atra - here; nirehi - go; na -
not; itaù - from this; iti - thus; ukti - of the statement; sidhu-rasa - by the nectar; tarpita - satisfied;
hrt - at heart; tada - then; eva - certainly; niskramya - going; jala-vitatau - in the tangle of
creepers; vidadhani - I will place; netre - my eyes.

Kåñëa will then say to me, "Your mistress speaks in this way because She is intoxicated. I
will cure Her. Don't go away, stay and see My cure." Satisfied at heart by the nectar of these
words, I will hide in the tangle of vines and happily watch Kåñëa's cure with my own eyes.

ghräëäkñi-karëa-vadane jala-seka-tatyä
kåñëas tvayä jita itaù sahasä nimajjya
gräho bhavan sa khalu yat kurute sma tat tu
vedäny ahaà tava mukhämbujam eva vékñya

ghrana - nose; aksi - eyes; karna - ears; vadane – and mouth; jala - of water; seka-tatya - by
splashing; kåñëaù - Kåñëa; tvaya - by You; jitaù - defeated; itaù - therefore; sahasa - at once;
nimajjya - immersed; grahaù - crocodile; bhavan - being so; saù - He; khalu - indeed; yat -
which; kurute sma - did; tat tat - that; vedani - understand; aham - I; tava - Your; mukha-
ambujam – lotus face; eva - certainly; viksya - seeing.

By splashing Kåñëa's nose, eyes, ears and mouth, You defeated Him in the water-contest,
and He will submerge himself in the water like crocodile. What he does next I will understand
by seeing Your lotus face.

aliù - the gopis; tvam - You; snapayani - I will bathe; vasana - with garments; abharanaiù - with
ornaments; vicitram - wonderfully; srngarayani - I will decorate; mani - jewelled; mandira -
palace; puspa - of flowers; talpe - on a bed; sambhojayani - I will feed; karaka-adi –
pomegranates and other fruits; atha - then; sayayani - put to rest.

The gopés and I will anoint You and Your beloved with fragrant oils, bathe You,
wonderfully decorate You with garments and ornaments, bring You to a jewelled palace, feed
You pomegranates and other fruits, and put You to rest on a bed of flowers.

nihnutya mågyasi kathaà tad itaù paratra

fill you with great joy.

"O Kåñëa! Devi is hiding among those väëira trees. Why do You search for Her here and
there?" Not believing my true words, He will go in another direction. I will say this to You
and fill You with great joy.

nihnutya mågyasi kathaà tad itaù paratra

"O Svamini, Kåñna is now hiding among those kadamba trees. Why do You search for Him
here and there?" By believing my words, You will find Kåñna. In this way I will bring You
victory.

not; datum - to give; adatum - to claim; api - even; ahaha - Oh; cumbanam - kissing; isise - are
able; tvam - You; na - not; aslesa - embracing; cumba - kissing; madhura - sweetness; adhara -
of the lips; panataù - than drinking; anyam - another; dyute - in gambling; glaham – a bet; rasa-
vidaù – those expert in relishing the transcendental mellows; pravaram - best; vadanti - say.

Kåñna says to You: "O Rädhä, if You win, then a kiss is Your prize, and if You lose You
must pay with a kiss. Experts of rasa say that in the game of dice there are no better bets
than embraces, kisses and drinking sweet nectar of the lover's lips!"

Then You say: "On Govardhana Hill lives a pulinda girl named Bhåìgé who is very expert
in these matters. She is My friend, and I will appoint her to accept Your kisses and embraces
if I win and give them to You if I lose."

then; asayani - I will sit; tam - Him; lajjayani - embarassing; su-mukhiù - the beautiful-faced; ati-
hasayani - I will cause to heartily laugh.

After speaking these words to Your lover, You will say to me: "Please fetch her!" I will
quickly and happily bring Bhåìgé and sit her next to Mukunda, embarrassing Your beautiful-
faced beloved and making Him burst with laughter.

bharyam - own wife; sa - she; lampata - adulterous; api - even; bhavataù - of You; adhara - of
the lips; sidhu – nectar; sikta - moistened; api - although; anyam - another; pumamsam - man;
iha - here; mrgyati - searches; citram - astonishing; etat - this.

Rädhä says: "You can not protect the flute, Your only wife in this town of Vraja. Although
she is filled with the nectar of Your lips, she is an adulteress, and now she is searching for
another man. This is amazing!"

Kåñëa will reply: "You wicked girls hate my chaste, virtuous, auspicious, beautiful flute!
You will never be its equal! You have unjustly stolen and hiding My vaàçé, but I will punish
you. I will bind you with the ropes of My arms and imprison you in a cave on this hill!"

Seeing Hari approach, I will quickly take the flute from You and carefully hide it. Then I
will see Your wonderful and sweet amorous battle with Kåñëa.

ity äryayä praëamitäà dhåta-vipra-veçe
kåñëe’rpitäà ca bhavatéà smita-bhäg bhajäni

respects; dhrta-vipra-vese - disquised as a brahmana; kåñëe - to Kåñëa; arpitam - offered; ca -

"O brähmaëa, please be merciful! My daughter-in-law wishes to worship the Sun god."
Speaking these words, noble Jaöilä will bow down before Kåñëa disguised as a brähmaëa,
and also offer You to Him. Smiling slightly, I will worship this moment in my heart.

Obediently returning home, You will thirst to see Your beloved again. On some pretext I
will follow behind you. Turning back and calling to me, "Come, come!", You will take a last
sip of the splendor of Kåñëa's face.

Arrived at home, You will suffer because of separation from Your beloved. Although I will
lay You on a bed of fresh flowers, You will think it is blazing bonfire. Then I will anoint You
with camphor and sandal paste and place You on a bed of lotus stems.

I will clean the fireplace, put the pot on the stove, light the cooking fire, and bring water,
ghee, sugar, bananas, black pepper, camphor, coconuts, wheat flour and other ingredients.

was increasing despite anointing You with sandal paste, has now been extinguished by the
heat of the fire on which You cook karpüra-keli cakes. This is most amazing!"

nirasta - abandoned; samasta - all; krtyam - duties; tvam - You; utthitam - arisen; saha - with;
ganam - Your friends; abhisarayani - I will arrange the meeting.

"Hari’s mooing cows are approaching, and the dust from their hooves has covered all
directions!" I will give You the incomparably sweet honey of these great news to drink.
Intoxicated by drinking that nectar, You will drop all Your duties. Then I will take You and
Your friends to meet Kåñna.

tat-kåñëa-vartma-nikaöa-sthalam änayäni
nirväpayäëi virahänalam unnataà te

I will take You to the path where Kåñëa must walk, and thus extinguish Your great fire of
separation from Him. Saying, "Here He comes!", I will pull You from Your hiding place in the
vines. By that, O Éçvaré, I will make You angry.

I will make the two bumblebees of Kåñëa's eyes smell the lotus of Your face. I will plunge
the two thirsty cakoré birds of Your eyes in the flood of sweetness from the moon of Kåñna's
face blooming with a smile. Thus I will bring You back to life.

amåta-keli sweets, I will go with the sakhés to Queen Yaçoda.

Arriving there, I will bow down before Queen Yaçodä. O Devi, when she asks about Your
welfare, I will tell her You are well. Showing a multitude of sweets that You have prepared, I
will please her. Hearing her tell of Your good qualities in the presence of the gopés, I will
become very happy.

Seeing her son returning, Mother Yaçoda will be plunged in great waves of love. She will
shower Him with a flood of tears from her eyes and milk from her breasts. She will order
her maidservants, and also me, to anoint her son with oil and prepare Him for His bath. In
my mind I will glorify Queen Yaçoda.

Bathed, anointed, wonderfully splendid with new clothes and ornaments, and
accompanied by His friends, Kåñna will eat and drink the delicious meal Mother Yasoda
lovingly serves Him. Then, unseen, I will take His remnants.

As Kåñna, accompanied by His friends, takes a bath in Pävana-sarovara, He will dive under
the water, swim across the lake to the place where You are bathing, embrace You underwater,
return, and surface again.

Your sister-in-law and others will not be aware of what had happened, and neither will
Kåñna's brother and friends. Understanding this, I will joyfully describe Kåñna's cleverness
to Lalitä and other gopés.

beloved; surabhiù - the surabhi cows; duhanam - milking; ananda - of bliss; varidhi - of the

Ascending the watchtower in the middle of the garden, taking You to the window, and
showing You Your beloved as He milks the surabhi cows, I will immerse You into great waves
of the ocean of bliss.

When Mukunda finishes the food and drink served by Queen Yaçoda, I will privately
approach Him and tell about Your condition, hear from Him where You should meet Him in
the forest, and then return to You and describe Kåñna's great longing to meet with You.

hitva - rejecting; anyaù - other; kila - indeed; vasanaù - desires; bhajata - just worship; re -
Oh; våndavanam - Våndavana; prema-dah – bestower of prema; radha-kåñëa - of Sri Sri Radha-
Kåñëa; vilasa - of the pastimes; varidhi - of the ocean; rasa - of nectar; asvadam - taste; na - not;
cet - if; vindatha - enjoy; tyaktum - to abandon; sankutha na - you should not; sprham - the
desire; api - even; punaù - again; tatra - there; eva - certainly; hrt - of the heart; vrttayaù -
activities; visraddhaù - faithless; srayata - just take shelter; mama - my; eva - certainly; satatam -
constantly; sankalpa - of desires; kalpa-drumah – of the desire tree.

O faithless heart! Please give up all other desires, and just worship this abode of
Våndävana, which bestows prema. Even if you cannot taste the sweet nectar from the ocean
of Çri Çri Rädhä-Kåñna's pastimes, please do not give up longing to taste it. You will quickly
attain perfection by taking eternal shelter of this desire tree of aspirations, Çri Saìkalpa-
kalpadruma!
