AISC DG02 Example 001 PDF

This document summarizes an analysis of a steel beam with an unreinforced opening using the software ETABS. The beam is a W24x55 section supporting uniform loads. An unreinforced 10x20 in. opening is checked at the third point of the 36-foot span. ETABS results for required strengths, member capacities, and an interaction ratio are compared to independent hand calculations and show excellent agreement at 0% difference. The analysis demonstrates the capability of ETABS to accurately model composite beam web openings.

STEEL BEAM WITH UNREINFORCED OPENING

EXAMPLE DESCRIPTION
A W24x55 section supports uniform loads wd = 0.607 kip/ft and wl = 0.800 kip/ft
on a 36-foot simple span. The beam is laterally braced throughout its length.
ASTM A36 steel is used. Check if an unreinforced 10x20 in. opening can be
placed at the third point of the span.

RESULTS COMPARISON

Independent results in this table are taken from the hand calculations presented
below. These calculations parallel and at times refine the calculations presented
in Example 1 from “Design Guide 2: Steel and Composite Beams with Web
Openings”, Design Guide Series Number 2, AISC 1990.

CONCLUSION
The ETABS results show an excellent comparison with the independent results.

W24x55, as defined in the Design Guide example and in the AISC LRFD
Manual 2nd Edition:
d = 23.57 in, bf = 7.005 in, tf = 0.505 in, tw = 0.395 in
As = 16.2 in2, Z = 134.4 in3
Because newer AISC manuals list the depth of a W24x55 as 23.6 in, the ETABS
section definition is retrieved from the ETABS legacy section property tables.
