2 - Tutorial 2 - Facility Location

This document contains two exercises related to facility planning and design. The first exercise asks the reader to determine the optimal location for a pizza delivery business based on demand from different campus locations. It asks for the interaction where the business should start looking and the weekly load-distance score. The second exercise provides shipping costs and requirements between factories and warehouses and asks the reader to determine the optimal shipping schedule using three transportation methods.

INME 333 Facility Planning and Design October - Fall 2013/14

Facility Location, TUTORIAL TWO

Exercise One
Val’s Pizza is looking for a single central location to make pizza for delivery only. This college
town is arranged on a grid with arterial streets, as shown in the figure. The main campus (A),
located at 14th and R, is the source of 4000 pizza orders per week. Three smaller campuses (B,C
and D) are located at 52nd and V, at 67th and Z, at 70th and South. Orders from the smaller
campuses average 1000 pizzas a week. In addition, the State Patrol headquarters (E) at 10th and
A orders 500 pizzas per week.

a- At about what interaction should Val start looking for a suitable site?
b- What is the rectilinear weekly load-distance score for this location?
c- If the delivery person can travel 1 mile in 2 minutes on arterial streets and ¼ mile per
minute on residential streets, going from the center of gravity location to the farthest
demand location will take how long?

Exercise Two:

The Ajax International Company operated four factories that ship products to five warehouses.
The shipping costs, requirements, and capacities are shown in the figure. Use the three
transportation methods to determine the shipping schedule.

W1 W2 W3 W4 W5 Capacity
F1 1 3 3 5 6 50,000
F2 2 2 1 4 5 80,000
F3 1 5 1 3 1 80,000
F4 5 2 4 5 4 40,000
Demand 45,000 30,000 30,000 35,000 50,000 60,000
